The best mooring position is on the inside of the jetty extending from the W side of the cove.  There is space for three or four yachts to go bows or stern-to using their anchors or - if the bay is quiet - for one to go alongside (as long as you are prepared to raft up if someone else arrives).  Depths on the jetty are 4.0 - 6.0 metres.  The jetty is quite high and getting lines ashore involves a bit of a scramble.  The holding is good in sand.  Shelter here is good in all but N winds, which makes the harbour untenable if they are very strong.

Harbour of U. Stiniva from N

The cove of U. Stiniva lies four miles E of the extreme W tip of the island of Hvar in Croatia and two miles W of the entrance to the Starogradski Zaljev, the gulf leading to the harbour of Stari Grad. There is a small harbour at the head of the cove, formed by a breakwater extending from the W side which is quayed on its inner side. There is little in the cove except for a few houses and holiday homes at the head of the bay, but it is a pleasant and peaceful stop as long as there is nothing N in the wind.

Weather

Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

For sources of weather forecasting, see Croatia.

Navigation

There are no dangers in the approach to U. Stiniva. Depths in the inlet range from 15.0 metres at the entrance to 6.0 metres towards the head.

Entrance

The town of Hvar is the nearest summer port of entry. At other times of year, Split or Korcula are the nearest year-round ports of entry.

Otherwise, anchor in the bay in 6.0 - 8.0 metres. The holding is good in sand with weed patches.
