Weather

Chatham weather is typical for New England. It is changeable. The typical summer conditions are fair and calm in the mornings with a strong South West wind building in the afternoon, dying off in evening. A high pressure system will bring North West winds that are dry and cold. Low pressure systems are preceded by Easterly winds. South Easterly winds usually bring fog. North Easterly winds are rainy and cold.

Navigation

Provide any navigation notes especially any dangers or peculiar local conditions here.Chatham Harbor opens into the Atlantic Ocean. Chatham Light is conspicuous. The entrance is considered dangerous and should be used with local knowledge only. The harbor leads up to Pleasant Bay which is a pretty and shoal body of water used by small power boats and shallow draft sail boats, typically catboats. It is not considered good cruising ground for ocean going yachts.

Stage Harbor opens into Nantucket Sound. The harbor has sufficient water for ocean going sailing yachts. The harbor is marked by a red and white buoy, "SH" and the channel is well buoyed. The channel shoals and moves so caution is required for vessels with drafts over six feet. There are yachts with deeper drafts in the harbor. Coordinating entry and departure with the tide may be required.

Berthing

Chatham, MA has two harbors. Stage Harbor opens into Nantucket Sound. Stage Harbor leads to two interior ponds, Oyster Pond and Mill Pond and the town center. Both pond inlets are shallow. Stage Harbor is deep enough for cruising yachts. Mooring rental may be arranged through the Harbor Master's Office or Stage Harbor Marine. Just inside the entrance to the harbor is a pleasant cove with town moorings. Anchoring is restricted and the harbor master will advise where a visiting yacht may anchor or moor.

Chatham Harbor opens to the Atlantic Ocean and is subject to considerable shifting. It is generally considered unwise to use this harbor entrance without local knowledge. Chatham Harbor leads to the town of Orleans via Pleasant Bay. there are three boat yards suitable for small craft only. Pleasant Bay and the upper Chatham Harbor are noted for sandbars, some narrow cuts and protected salt water ponds.
