Indonesia consists of 17,508 islands, about 6,000 of which are inhabited. These are scattered over both sides of the equator. The five largest islands are Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan (the Indonesian part of Borneo), New Guinea (shared with Papua New Guinea), and Sulawesi. Indonesia shares land borders with Malaysia on the islands of Borneo and Sebatik, Papua New Guinea on the island of New Guinea, and East Timor on the island of Timor. Indonesia also shares borders with Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines to the north and Australia to the south across narrow straits of water. The capital, Jakarta, is on Java and is the nation's largest city, followed by Surabaya, Bandung, Medan, and Semarang.

Weather

Hot and humid climate. The period from July to September is the dry season and from December to January is the rainy period. Temperatures range from 75-90°F (24-33°C). The islands fall within the influence of the SE monsoon from April to October and the NW monsoon from November to March. Land and sea breezes predominate nearby the islands. The islands are not affected by tropical cyclones.

Islands

According Indonesia Ministry of Sea and Fishing, the region which has the highest number of island is West Papua region. 4,514 out of 16,771 islands are located in West Papua region. On the second place is Riau region (2,025 islands), third place is Central Sulawesi region (1,572 islands) and the fourth place is Maluku region (1,337 islands). (From Bali Marina)

Upon arrival, the Indonesian Government requires all yachts to have, in their possession, the following documents:

• A Passport valid at least more than six months from the date you will enter Indonesia. (check your expiration date)
• A “CAIT” (or Cruising Permit). PLAN AHEAD! The process takes 7 weeks. The CAIT is issued for 90 days. If you wish to stay longer in Indonesia --- NO PROBLEM. They can process another CAIT.
• Your last port clearance and boat registry.
• Tourist visas will be issued at selected gateways:

  Airports: Medan, Pekanbaru, Padang, JKT, Surabaya, Bali & Manado.

Customs and Immigration

A TOURIST VISA ON ARRIVAL (Visa Kunjungan Saat Kedatangan) will be issued on arrival for 30 days for US$ 25.00 for selected countries:- Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Dutch, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Iran, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Laos, Liechtenstein, Luxemburg, Maladies, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Rep.People of China, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Suriname, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, UAE, UK, USA. Countries not on this list must apply for a visa at the nearest offshore Indonesian Embassy/Consulate.

A FREE TOURIST VISA ON ARRIVAL for these countries:- Brunei Darussalam, Chili, Hong Kong (SAR), Macao (SAR), Malaysia, Morocco, Peru, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Tourist visas will be issued at selected gateways: Airports: Medan, Pekanbaru, Padang, JKT, Surabaya, Bali & Manado. Seaports: Batam, Tanjung Uban (Bintan), Tanjung Pinang, Tanjung Balai Karimun, Belawan (Medan), Sibolga (Sumatra), Dumai, Teluk Bayur (Padang), Tanjung Priok (Jakarta), Tanjung Mas (Semarang) Padang Bai & Benoa (Bali), Tenau (Kupang), Maumere, Pare-pare, Bitung (Menado),and Jayapura (Papua).

• It is recommended that all yachts apply for A SOCIAL BUDAYA VISA. With a sponsor letter and CAIT in hand, you will receive a visa good for 60 days at the nearest Indonesian Consulate (in Darwin, the Consulate fee is A$60.00). You can extend this visa before the 60-days visa expire, every 30-days up to 4 times. We (an agent/Bali Marina) charge Rp.500.000,- or US Dollar equivalent per person for a sponsor letter.
• A Crew List, which matches the names and passport numbers on your CAIT, will be issued on arrival. We strongly suggest that all crew and/or visitors to sail with the boat in Indonesia are listed on the CAIT before hand.

Notes

1. The capital city of Central Java is Semarang and the Tanjung Mas port is on the northern part of Semarang City
2. The capital city of East Java is Surabaya and the Tanjung Perak port is on the northern part of Surabaya City
3. Tanjung Priok port and Sunda Kelapa port is in the northern part of DKI Jakarta.
4. Tanjung Priok Port is mostly dominated by container and general cargo business.
5. Conventional ship and yachts are located in Sunda Kelapa port.
6. Apart from Tanjung Priok port and Sunda Kelapa port, DKI Jakarta has Ancol Marina
   • Its location is exactly between the Sunda Kelapa port and Tanjung Priok port.
   • The yachts, berthing in Ancol Marina, are used by passenger to reach the exclusive resorts in Kepulauan Seribu (Thousands island) not far from DKI Jakarta
