Murter (village)

| |
The port of Murter lies at the head of a wide bay on the N coast of the island of Murter in Croatia, separated from the mainland by the mile wide channel of Pirovacki Zaljev.
Sheltered from N by a chain of small islets, Murter is the largest settlement on the island and has a history dating back before the Roman era. The ruins of the Roman village of Colentum, dating back to the 1st century AD, can still be seen NE of the village.
The village offers good facilities for visiting yachts in the shape of the 370-berth Marina Hramina on the NE side of the bay, a series of jetties on the S side where a yacht may find space alongside and a good anchorage off the village in the bay itself. Shelter in the bay is good except in very strong N/NE winds and in the marina excellent.
In the village is an office of the Kornati National Park Authority, where permits to visit the park can be purchased at a discount to the price charged on arrival.

Approach from N
The approach to Murter from the N, which is the direction from which most cruising yachts arrive, is difficult and should not be attempted without an up to date chart nor in extreme weather conditions.
Approach from W
There are a few shallow passages between a chain of islets located between Vrgadski Kanal and Pirovački Zaljev.
Radelj and Pršnjak Mali [[Murter (village)#Radelj and Pršnjak Mali|Radelj and Pršnjak Mali]] 43°50.825'N, 015°33.733'E Min. depth 3m.

Danger: None of the passages between the islands in the approaches can be described as safe in heavy weather.
Approach from S
The approach from the S, between Murter Island and the mainland, presents no special difficulties other than the numerous islets to be avoided. Note, however, that the channel in the approach to Tisno shoals from over 12 metres to barely two metres once past the pier to port at the S end of the town.
Movable bridge in Tisno [[Murter (village)#Movable bridge in Tisno|Movable bridge in Tisno]] 43°47.951'N, 015°38.496'E The depth under the bridge is about 2.4 m. The height if the closed bridge is 2 m. Strong SE of NW winds and tide could cause a current up to 4 knots. The bridge opens daily from May 15th to September 15th at 0900 and 1700 and at other times on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only at 0900.

Tourism
Murter has a long history, dating back to Illyrian times. Visible traces of subsequent Roman occupation can be seen in the ruins of the town of Colentum at the NE end of Murter bay, which flourished during the 1st and 2nd centuries AD.
The village and harbour of Betina, 20 mins walk SE, are delightful. The quays are lined with traditional, lateen-rigged gajetas and there are several good restaurants.
