The quay at Ribadesella

Ribadesella is a small fishing town and harbour lying at the foothills of the Picos de Europa mountains in NW Spain where the River Sella meets the sea. It lies about 30 miles east of Gijon and just under 60 miles west of Santander. The town’s principal claim to fame is as the nearest harbour for an excursion into the Picos de Europa National Park. It also boasts a nearby cave system, the Cave of Tito Bustillo, with a number of intriguing palaeolithic cave paintings. The harbour here is tidal and access is only possible within two hours of high water and for vessels drawing less than 2.0 metres.

Navigation

There is a bar at the entrance to the River Sella and entry is only possible about two hours before high water, when least depths in the narrow channel are around 2.5 metres. Entry in strong northerly winds would be impracticable and dangerous in view of the considerable swell that builds up on the bar. Once across the bar, keep to the port side of the channel for the deeper water. Tidal streams in the river can run at 3.0 knots or more, which should be noted if arriving or leaving at anything other than slack water.

Berthing

Yachts moor alongside at the quay below the bridge across the river, where they often have to fight for space with the fishing boats. Although this stretch is ostensibly reserved for leisure craft, in reality, you may well find a fisherman insisting you are ‘in his berth’. If there is another yacht moored here, your safest bet is probably to raft up alongside it as the fishermen tend not to raft up three deep in view of the narrowness of the channel. Depths at the quay range from 1.0 metre to 4.0 metres - the deeper water is along the quay between the ‘elbow’ and the bridge.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

None.

Anchorages

Anchorage in the bay is possible if arriving too late to catch the tide but only if the weather is settled, otherwise the swell makes the bay too uncomfortable. In such circumstances, a yacht is better off continuing the 30 miles to Gijon if going west or biting the bullet and heading the 60 miles to Santander if heading east.

Tourism

The Picos de Europa

The Picos de Europa National Park is 15 miles inland from Ribadesella and is a wonderful place to spend a few days. You may be lucky enough to spot an Iberian brown bear or even the endangered Iberian lynx. The palaeolothic cave paintings at the cave of Tito Bustillo are also worth a visit (open Wednesday to Sunday 10.00 - 16.30 from 1 April to 8 September). Guided tours (in Spanish only) take place every 25 minutes. It can get very busy here during July and August and it may be necessary to book ahead.
