Welcome to CruisersWiki!

We all look forward to your valued contributions to the Cruising Wiki. Help it grow as a useful, free resource for all cruisers around the world.

Spend a little time reading the help pages (link in L/H menu) and the Style Guide to gain a better understanding of the Wiki formatting and how to edit articles. Please add what you can - even correcting grammar and spelling errors in articles is a great help. The more you use the Wiki the easier (and more addictive) it becomes.

Use any page's "Discussion" tab (top of page's menu) to ask any questions or make any suggestions about that particular page.

Please set your personal preferences in "My Preferences" (link at top R/H of page when logged in).

Also, please read the Cruiserswiki Copyrights notice, as well as the General Disclaimers (links at bottom of pages).

Again, welcome and have fun! Bring out that hidden "Cruising Guide writer" in you. Lighthouse 13:06, 10 October 2011 (BST)

I've created two new pages on the Wiki, for Portimao and Marina de Portimao, incorporating several of your personal notes on the existing Portimao page. Please check and update any of the information if there are any inaccuracies. --Athene of Lymington 17:50, 20 March 2013 (GMT)

Recent Edits

I am impressed by the quality of your recent edits. Keep up the good work that helps our fellow cruisers. --Thanks. I think this is a great resource which, hopefully, will only get better. Still not clear on how to add some photos, however. eg. of the little harbour in Scauri --LifePart2

To place a photo, you must first upload it. You do this by clicking "Upload file" under "toolbox" on the left side of the edit page. Please make sure that the image you upload is either yours or in the public domain. Also try to keep the size under 800 x 800 pixels, and give it a unique name

Once you have uploaded the photo you then use it by inserting in a wiki page the following line:

[[Image:Sailing800.jpg|thumb|345px|right| '''Place comment here''' - ''Click for larger view'']], where
Sailing800.jpg is replaced name of the the file you have uploaded,
345px specifies the width of the photo to be displayed in pixels (for photos in marina pages use 320)
thumb specifies that a click will display the actual size photo in a new window
and right that it is to be displayed on the right side

Good luck and if you have any problems or questions please contact me.

Hi Noel & Ceu

After several discussions among the wiki administrators we decided as an encouragement to more wiki contributions to let active contributors add their personal Web site

In your case, if you do have a Web site, you will add under "Last Visited & Details Checked (and updated here)" date of visit --LifePart2 Sailboat favicon.png Life: Part2.

It was very nice meeting you last week.--Istioploos 13:30, 18 July 2013 (BST)

PS. I have already done this in some of the pages you have edited.

-- Thanks. It was indeed a pleasure to meet with you too. Just a shame you had to leave so early, but I hope you did a good job of cooking!

As I suggested, I also think it would be a good idea to have a lightbox popover appear after a new user has been on the site for, say 2 minutes (long enough to show they are using the site), with some kind of moral imperative for them to contribute if they found it useful. Something along the lines of

"Are you finding this page useful? If so, please would you 'pay it forward' by contributing to the pages about places that you have previously visited. It doesn't have to be much - even a single line giving your date of visit in the section "Last Visited & Details Checked " tells other people that the information is current and up to date. And don't worry about screwing anything up - all edits are moderated, so if do you make a mistake, it will be corrected for you. The more people that do even the smallest of updates, the more useful this site will become. To get started, just register here: Oh, and if you have a relevant blog or website, you can include a link to that too."

- or something like that. The fewer barriers people perceive, the more will do it LifePart2 14:14, 18 July 2013 (BST)

New approach to the Wiki

We are in the process of making some major changes to the World Cruising Wiki to make it easier for subscribers to contribute comments and updates without having to master complex templates and editing routines.

We plan to introduce a new facility for users to post personal experiences or comments on pages for harbours they visit by simply clicking on a 'Comments' tab. The admins will then – if necessary – use the information to edit and update the page.

This 'Comments' page will also act as a useful depository for users' experiences and suggestions to be read in conjunction with the main page.

We are running this initially as a test covering Italy, Croatia, Montenegro and Albania and it would be a great help if you could take a look at the pages for any harbours you have visited in these countries and post some comments to test the system. I know you have now left the Med but you were kind enough to input some information back in 2012.

We would also welcome any initial reactions you may have to the change or any suggestions for taking it further. You can do this either by replying directly to me or by joining the discussion on the future of the Wiki at [1].

Best wishes

Hi Gordon

I would be glad to, but am pretty busy at the moment, so it will have to wait until we are back onboard- maybe late May. Sorry!

No problem Noel. Late May is fine - the Wiki isn't going anywhere!
