The catwalk moorings in Uvala Lucina

The small harbour of Uvala Lucina is the main ferry port of the island of Molat in Croatia and lies on the SE side of the Brgulski Zaljev, the large gulf that bisects the southern end of Molat. It is situated just over a mile NW from the SE extremity of the island and two miles SE of the large buoy field at the settlement of Brgulje. The harbour provides berths for around 20 yachts in total, mostly with laid moorings (plus two alongside for larger yachts) in depths of between 2.0 and 5.0 metres. The inner harbour at the top of the inlet is shallow and suitable for small craft only. Shelter is excellent in all but SW winds, which send a swell directly into the harbour and render it untenable if they are very strong. The small settlement of Lucina is around 500 metres uphill from the harbour.

Navigation

There are no dangers in the immediate approach to U. Lucina. The spire of the village church on the hill at the head of the inlet is conspicuous, as is the red port marker on the end of the ferry jetty on closer approach.

Berthing

There are four main berthing options in U.Lucina.

A. Outside of ferry quay

On the outside of the jetty where the ferry berths there are five laid moorings in depths of 3.5 – 4.0 metres at the N end. The S end of this section is reserved for tripper and hotel boats. The N part of the quay is clearly marked in blue lettering 'Yachts Only'.

B Indented quay section

Immediately N of the ferry quay is an indented section of quay with laid moorings for 10 yachts in depths of 2.5 – 3.5 metres. Depths at the quay are variable in parts and yachts with deep rudder draft may prefer to go bows-to. The whole harbour is relatively shallow here and the mooring lines extend out from the quay at a very shallow angle, so care is needed when berthing to avoid tangling with the lines of moored yachts.

C. Concrete catwalk

At the N end of the harbour on the outside of the breakwater of the inner harbour is a concrete catwalk that has six moorings in shallow depths of only 1.5 – 2.0 metres. These moorings are at 90 degrees to the moorings on the indented quay section and are only really suitable for smaller yachts and day boats going bows-to.

D. Inside of ferry berth

There is room for 2-3 yachts only to moor alongside on the inside of the ferry jetty in depths of 4.5 – 5.0 metres. These positions are normally reserved for larger yachts. It can be noisy in this position when the ferry is in and running its generator.

It is in a wide, U-shaped bay lying just half a mile NW of U. Lucina. Anchor in the NW corner in 5.0 - 6.0 metres where convenient. The holding in sand is good. Shelter is good from all directions except S and SW, when U. Lucina offers better shelter in all but strong SW winds.

Tourism

The village seems locked in time

The settlement of Lucina is around 500 metres uphill from the harbour and is quiet and completely untouristy – some might say locked in time. From here it is possible to explore the unspoilt and peaceful island of Molat on several walking trails.

Grocery & Supply Stores

  • Small vegetable stall at the harbour. Grocery store in the villages (500 metres uphill).

Eateries

  • Café and pizza/grill stall next to the yacht quay
  • Restaurant at the head of the harbour
