Overview
Yate lies on the south east coast of New Caledonia and is the first significant anchorage north of Havannah Passe, lying just 12nm up the coast. It provides sheltered anchorage in a river mouth and there are two small settlements providing some facilities. There are a couple of small shops at Wao, as well as a Maire (local council office), a local market and a new Tourism Information Centre. There is another shop at the Yate Power Station site further up river.

Reefs fringe the entrance of Riviere Yate on both sides, but, so long as you stay clear of these, there are no isolated dangers.Once inside the entrance, follow the obvious red and green beacons and anchor east of the low road bridge which limits further navigation up the river.
Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)
You must check in with Customs at Noumea before proceeding anywhere else in New Caledonia

Anchorages
- An obvious anchorage lies off a ruined wharf, just west of the mouth of the Petite Riviere Yate, which enters from the south. The anchorage is sheltered from swell, but would be exposed to easterly winds. The navigable section of the river is quite narrow here and care should be taken to avoid the shoal area off Pointe Chocolat.
With care (its shallow), you can take a dinghy into Petite Riviere Yate and land on the southern bank. It is then a short walk to the east to the village of Wao, with its few shops and facilities.

Tourism
List places of interest, tours, etc.
- Visit the Yate Power Station. This involves a dinghy trip about 1 nm upstream. The power station is a hydro electric facility built around 1958 and runs off water from the huge Lac de Yate, an artificial lake created by the Barrage de Yate. Visiting the dam would be interesting, but would require road transport.
- There is a new tourism centre in Wao
Grocery & Supply Stores
- A small grocery and hardware store at Wao
- There is a small shop which sells fresh bread from the back of a home - it is east of the hardware store and down a side road (ask around!)
- There is a brand new market building next to the Tourism Centre. Market days are Wednesday and Friday.
- There is a store and fuel station at the Yate Power Station site (up the hill, passed the power station). Note that this store closes between 12:00 and 14:30. It is a 1 nm dinghy trip up the river to the Power station.
