Gozo Marina (Port of Entry)

Gozo Marina is located on the northern side of Mgarr harbour. The harbour is also used by local fishing boats, day tripper boats, plus the the drive on passenger ferries running between Gozo and Malta. The marina itself consists of a number of floating pontoons with laid lines tailed to the pontoons. In the summer of 2010 Harbour Management, the proprietors of Manoel Island marina in Malta, acquired Mgarr Marina from the Malta Maritime Authority.

Navigation/Approach

The approach to Mgarr, the main port of Gozo, is generally straightforward, but note that there can be accelerated winds in the channel between Gozo and Comino.

Port of Entry

Mgarr is a Port of Entry for Malta. When first entering Maltese waters yachts are required to contact "Valletta Port Control" on VHF 12 or 16 before entry to the harbour. See Malta page for full details of immigration and customs requirements.

Weather protection

During the winter months passing gales can sometimes make the marina very uncomfortable and there are reports that exceptional conditions have in the past caused pontoons to break adrift and yachts to be damaged. If thinking of leaving a yacht unattended during the winter months it is recommended to contact an experienced person locally who can attend to the yacht during any bad weather.

Local facilities

  • Bar/Cafeteria/Restaurant. There are a number of bars, cafes and restaurants around the port.
  • Parking
  • Bank (near by)
  • Mini-market. On the road heading up from the port.

Security

Most pontoons are locked, may need magnetic card (security deposit).

Transport

There is frequent bus service from Mgarr to Victoria, the main town in the centre of Gozo, from where buses run all over the island. Buses to and from Mgarr are usually timed to fit in with the ferry timetable

Personal experience

A pleasant marina in a rather charming spot. Perfect for exploring the island of Gozo. Some charming restaurants aroundthe harbour. Decent showers and toilets.

Miscellaneous

  • The marina can be crowded, particularly at weekends and on public holidays when local boats will come up from Valletta.
  • The harbour is frequently used by local horse owners and it is not unusual to see horses standing in the shallower water or possibly even swimming in the harbour.
  • The harbour is also used by a local seaplane operator. Flights are infrequent, but yachtsmen should not be surprised to encouter small seaplanes entering or leaving.
