Overview

Port Bouquet is a large, sheltered bay in the middle of the east coast of Grande Terre, New Caledonia. It offers a range of very protected, pleasant anchorages in relatively unspoiled surroundings. The Port is protected by a substantial barrier reef, but three wide passes provide good access. There are no services at all in the bay.


Cruising the region

Heading north, the next good stopping point is Anse de Lavaissiere, 20 nm away.

Heading either north or south, the track is relatively clear of dangers, with any of significance well marked.

Weather

Local weather conditions?

Sources for Weather forecasts:
Local forecasts are, of course, in French, but non-French speakers should find them relatively easy to understand. A very useful vocabulary can be found at How to Understand French Weather Forecasts for Sailors.

The main source of weather information for the area around New Caledonia is Meteo France Nouvelle-Calédonie. The marine section provides a 6 day forecast for the whole region, with details for each of the passes through the barrier reef.

Nouméa radio broadcasts the weather report in French on VHF 16, everyday at 6:30, 9:30, 15:15, 18:30.

There is a set of repeater channels allowing receipt of weather info anywhere in the country:

  • Nouméa area: VHF 26
  • Southern portion of the Grande Terre: VHF 28
  • Isle of Pines and the Southern Lagoon: VHF 25
  • Grande Terre North West coast: VHF 25
  • Northern portion of Grande Terre: VHF 24
  • Ouvea: VHF 23
  • Lifou: VHF 26
  • Maré: VHF 87

Navigation

There are three passes providing entry into Port Bouquet.

  • Passe Nord Ouest provides direct access to the northern half of the bay. It is half a mile wide and clear of dangers, but with reefs on both sides.
  • Passe Centrale is about 250 metres wide, deep and clear of dangers
  • Passe Sud - Est is about 250 metres wide and requires some care with shoals extending from the reefs on both sides. It is the easiest pass to use if approaching from the south and provides access to the southern half of the bay.

  • Ile Nemou. In conditions other than northerlies, anchor off the delightful sandy beach on the north side of this island. The island appears to be uninhabited, with the exception of a temporary camp behind the beach. Snorkelling on the reef to seaward of the island is good. Anchorage is in sand and coral. This is a delightful, pretty anchorage.
  • Presqu'ile Neumeni. In northerly conditions, anchor in the small bay to west of Pointe Neumeni. Be cautious of a large coral patch in the middle of the bay.
  • Ile Toupeti. Anchor in the eastern most portion of Anse Toupeti, a short distance in from Passe Sud-Est. This anchorage is good except in westerly and northerly winds. There are a series of small, pleasant beaches in this bay. A very nice spot to stop.
  • Anse Lemia. Anchor off the small fishing village. It may be possible to obtain fresh water from this village, but ask at the village before attempting this. The anchorage is very sheltered except in winds between west and north.
