Valun
| |
The small harbour of Valun lies on the W side of the gulf of the same name, which is situated on the NW coast of the island of Cres in Croatia. The E coast of the Istra peninsula on the mainland is only 10 miles to the W and the harbour and marina of Cres Town four miles NNE. The hamlet and its harbour lie at the foot of steep cliffs and, apart from a few restaurants along the waterfront, is largely unspoilt. The quay has laid moorings for around a dozen yachts. Shelter is good with S and W winds but the quay is completely open N and E.

Islands
Valun lies at the SW corner of the Gulf of Valun, five miles SSE of the headland of Rt. Pernat. There are no dangers in the approach, although with moderate to strong winds from NW round to E an unpleasant swell develops in the gulf and the quay here is nearly untenable. The quay is protected by a short breakwater.
Entrance
Valun is not a port of entry. The nearest port of entry is Mali Losinj on the island of Losinj.
Berthing
Ports
Immediately S of the short breakwater is a quay with depths of 2.0 - 3.0 metres. There are laid moorings here for around a dozen yachts. There are no facilities on the quay. Shelter here is poor in any winds from NW round to E and the berths are probably untenable in strong winds from these directions. In such conditions, Cres Town is a safer option.
Marinas & Yacht Clubs
- Marina Cres four miles NE.
Anchorages
The nearest sheltered anchorage is in the bay of Cres Town.

Tourism
Places to Visit
Valun is a highly photogenic hamlet, a cluster of old stone houses climbing up the hill from the harbour. Around the harbour are some good cafes and restaurants where one can sit and watch the infrequent comings and goings on the town quay. The small parish church of Valun displays an 11th tombstone inscribed in Glagolitic as well as Latin, one of the earliest examples in Croatia. On either side of the hamlet are some idyllic beaches, fringed with pines.
