Location

Charts:

Call: "Waitui Marina" on VHF 16. The shape of Savusavu Bay is such that calling anyone from outside the Savusavu (Point Passage) Light is likely not going to get thru. If you wait until you have a visual on Nawi Island and the main city concrete wharf, you will be able to get thru.

Navigation & Approach

Navigation Cautions for Yachts Entering Savusavu, Vanua Levu, Fiji Islands:

  • The Point Passage light lies on the INSIDE of the reef, about 50 meters east of the actual end of the reef. Chart legends show it as being a lighthouse, in truth it is more on the lines of a light standard sticking up on the reef. It is mostly, but not always, lit.
  • The rocks on the west side of Point Passage only break with a West to Southwest swell.
  • There is a mooring for the bows of the inter-island ferrys west of the Main Dock. If there is a ferry at the dock, it is probable that there is a line between the mooring buoy and the ferry. Based only on observation, no cruising yacht has been successful in moving the ferry by pushing on the mooring line. The mooring buoy's position, as determined by S/V Jill Diane is 16˚ 46.597'S 179˚ 19.492'E. This reference is provided for your convienence and is to be used at your own risk.
  • There is a channel marker as you enter Nakama Creek that you should leave to your port side. An avoidance waypoint, as determined by S/V Jill Diane is 16˚ 46.659'S 179˚ 19.796'E. This reference is provided for your convienence and is to be used at your own risk.
  • If you look off your starboard beam as you pass, you can see the Waitui Marina Building.

Hope to see you here soon!

General

  • Map of Services offered within Savusavu
  • In the Waitui Marina Building itself are Bebi Electronics, Liti's Laundry, Babu's Restaurant, Beachcomber Shipping, and the Waitui Bar (all are independant, local companies).
  • Babu's Restaurant is one of the best kept secrets from tourists. Babu used to be a chef at the Namale Resort. Not only does he have the tastiest food in town, but you get absolutely huge serves and very reasonable prices (in general, F$5 or less for a serve mounded on a 12" dinner plate).
  • Liti and her neice Evi run Liti's Laundry and also help out with the running of the marina. She has hot water wash and will also iron on request (fee).
  • Bebi Electronics are not only the managers of the Marina, but are the manufacturer's of LED lighting specifically for yachts world-wide. In addition, as a service to the cruising community in Savusavu, will undertake relevant marine electronic repairs. We do not have the equipment to repair radars in general, but do have the equipment (antenna analyzers, power meters, service monitor, 40 Mhz 'scope, frequency counters, RF micro-volt meter, etc.) to diagnose and repair most other electronics. No boom-boxes, VCRs, DVD players, etc., thank you!
  • Not shown on the chart is a new machine shop being opened up in the Gulubdas Lumber Yard outside of town by a South African gentleman by the name of Leon. He does excellent work and speaks English.
  • Beachcomber Shipping, besides being an outlet for Fiji Meats (you can order large quantities frozen from them), are also the agents for the Sina-Ni-Wasa, the inter-island ferry between Buca Bay and Taviuni. As the anchorages in Taviuni are a bit marginal at times, some cruisers have elected to leave their vessels in Savusavu, take the Beachcomber bus to Buca Bay, then the ferry to Tavuini and stay in a resort there. This again opens up some 'in-land' opportunities that are hard to realise in a yacht.
  • Beachcomber also operates the Mata-ni-Civa, an inter-island high speep catamaran between Savusavu and Nadi on occasion.
  • As on Sundays the sidewalks in town are all rolled up, if you don't want to hit the bars, a fun trip is to take the 10:00 (approximate) Napuka bus trip on the Hibiscus Highway. It will take you to the far end of the island, past Buca Bay, and will return around 1800 to town for around F$9.00/pp. Not only do you get the opportunity to see parts of Vanua Levu that you can't access by boat, but if you see someplace you like, just get off the bus and ask the driver about what time he will be passing by again and pick it up again on the backhaul.
