A yacht entering Yaté

Yaté lies on the south east coast of New Caledonia and is the first significant anchorage north of Havannah Passe, lying just 12nm up the coast. It provides sheltered anchorage in a river mouth and there are two small settlements providing some facilities. There are a couple of small shops at Wao, as well as a Maire (local council office), a local market and a new Tourism Information Centre. There is another shop at the Yate Power Station site further up river.

From Yate it is 13 nm south to the entrance to Canal De La Havannah. Note that the Passe is strongly tidal and slack water is the preferred entry time - see the Approach and Navigation notes on the Noumea page.

Sources for Weather forecasts

Local forecasts are, of course, in French, but non-French speakers should find them relatively easy to understand. A very useful vocabulary can be found at How to Understand French Weather Forecasts for Sailors. The main source of weather information for the area around New Caledonia is Meteo France Nouvelle-Calédonie. The marine section provides a 6 day forecast for the whole region, with details for each of the passes through the barrier reef.

Nouméa radio broadcasts the weather report in French on VHF 16, everyday at 6:30, 9:30, 15:15, 18:30.

There is a set of repeater channels allowing receipt of weather info anywhere in the country:

  • Nouméa area: VHF 26
  • Southern portion of the Grande Terre: VHF 28
  • Isle of Pines and the Southern Lagoon: VHF 25
  • Grande Terre North West coast: VHF 25
  • Northern portion of Grande Terre: VHF 24
  • Ouvea: VHF 23
  • Lifou: VHF 26
  • Maré: VHF 87

Navigation

Reefs fringe the entrance of Riviere Yate on both sides, but, so long as you stay clear of these, there are no isolated dangers.Once inside the entrance, follow the obvious red and green beacons and anchor east of the low road bridge which limits further navigation up the river. Leads should bear 283 degrees T at the entrance. These can be hard to see.

  • An obvious anchorage lies off a ruined wharf, just west of the mouth of the Petite Riviere Yate, which enters from the south. The anchorage is sheltered from swell, but would be exposed to easterly winds. The navigable section of the river is quite narrow here and care should be taken to avoid the shoal area off Pointe Chocolat.

With care (it's shallow), you can take a dinghy into Petite Riviere Yate and land on the southern bank. It is then a short walk to the east to the village of Wao, with its few shops and facilities.
