Balchik, Bulgaria (Port of Entry)

Balchik (Bulgarian: Балчик, Turkish: Balçık, Romanian: Balcic) is a Black Sea coastal town and seaside resort in the Southern Dobruja area of northeastern Bulgaria. It is located in Dobrich Oblast and is 42 km northeast of Varna. The town sprawls scenically along hilly terraces descending from the Dobruja plateau to the sea.

This port is the most northerly port in Bulgaria and the best port to clear in if coming from Romania.

Approach and Navigation

The approach to Balchik is straight forward and its breakwater can be easily seen from a distance.

When coming from the North (Romania) you will be called on VHF channel 16 by the Bulgarian border control authority when rounding Nos Kaliakra, requesting pertinent info. about boat and crew. They will also notify the border authorities in Balchik by telephone.

Caution: When coming from the South there is a permanent long fishing net set up a little to the West of the harbor entrance, with no lights.

The harbor now operates as marina with floating docks. It provides good all-round shelter.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

The pontoons are suitable for yachts up to 12m. While longer yachts can use them in fair weather, in strong northerly winds it might be safer to try and find a berth alongside if available.

Depths are at least 2.5 m.

There are shower and WC facilities.
