Katákolo (Κατάκολο) is mainly a commercial port in NW Peloponnese. It is the watermelon capital of Greece. While it is not a particularly attractive port, it is a convenient place to leave the yacht while visiting the ancient site of Olympia, 25 km away. It is a port of entry.

The small town at the harbour is quite cute. But shops will be mostly closed if there is no ship in town. However, through the summer there are ships on most days - sometimes three, which can rather over-run the small town!

The ancient site of Olympia, the place where the original Olympic Games were held, is only 25 km by taxi from Katakolo. It is a large site so you need to allow plenty of time for the visit.

While in Olympia, make sure that you visit the Museum, where among other masterpieces the magnificent statue of Hermes by Praxiteles is kept.

Personal Notes

Personal experiences?

  • We visited in early June, with one cruise ship at the dock. The small town along the waterfront is pleasant - cafes, tourist shops, small super market. Leon charged us €15 (the minimum rate) as we declined water etc. We took the train to Olympia, which is well worth a visit. Good signage in Greek, English and German. Interesting museum, again with three languages. Very impressive statues etc. Again, plenty of cafes with reasonable prices in Olympia village next to the archeological park.
