More notes about the Marina

The marina in Kusadasi was one of the first to be established in Turkey and is much frequented by cruising yachts travelling along the Turkish coast between the harbours of Didyma to the south and Sigacik to the north. It is also just 15 miles from Samos if clearing out from Greece into Turkey or vice versa. The marina can sometimes be full during July and August and it is wise to make a reservation if visiting during those months, especially since there are no good anchorages nearby. Shelter in the marina is excellent, since the bay of Kusadasi rarely experiences strong winds, even when a full gale is blowing in Central Aegean and Samos Sea.

Before entering the marina call Setur Marina on VHF channel 73. In the summer, it is a good idea to make an advance reservation.

Navigation/Approach

When approaching Kusadasi from the south or west (e.g. having passed through the Straits of Samos), a yacht should be sure to pass well offshore of the headlands of Karga Burnu and Yalanci Burnu to the S of Kusadasi, both of which have reefs extending some distance offshore. A new W cardinal buoy is now in position off Yalanci Burnu, about one mile SW of Bird Island (the conspicuous island with a small castle on it on the S side of Kusadasi harbour)--Athene of Lymington 14:21, 30 April 2011 (BST). A course 100 metres W of this buoy will clear all the dangers. Note, however, that there is a further shoal patch around 200 metres due N of the Yalanci Burnu buoy where depths shoal to around 5-6 metres. This is now marked with a isolated danger mark (black/red/black with two black ball topmarks) and a yacht can pass safely 50 metres on either side. Finally, a further dangerous reef near the root of the marina breakwater is marked with another W cardinal mark.

The head of the breakwater is marked with a red and white light tower. At night the lights are: FI. R. 3s. 5M / FI. G. 3s. 5M.

Berthing

The attendant will meet you with an inflatable at the entrance of the marina and direct you to your berth.

Note: Over 2011-12 major alterations are planned. A new pontoon has already been installed on a north/south axis running out from the centre of the northern quay, creating 75 additional moorings. In addition, a new development of shops and restaurants is under construction at the SE end of the marina, reducing the area of hard standing for larger yachts (13 metres and over) from 100 to only 50 boats. Business is business, and therefore it is likely that storage on the hard standing, already restricted to marina berthholders only, will become more expensive from 2011 onwards. Future developments in 2012 include a hotel and new bars and restaurants in the marina complex --Athene of Lymington 15:47, 29 September 2010 (UTC).

  • Ozbek Painting in the marina (telephone: +90 256 6181858; e-mail: [email protected]) are very good for GRP work and hull painting. Incidentally, Turkish two-part paints and antifouling are just as good as much more costly international brands --Athene of Lymington 16:11, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
  • Basar Demiray in the marina (telephone: +90 256 6182814; e-mail: [email protected]) offers an excellent service for all canvas work, including sail covers, biminis, sprayhoods etc. He also undertakes sail repairs and is the agent for Ullman Sails in Kusadasi.
  • Bebop Cafe in the marina has a first class international food offering which is a welcome change from the ubiquitous Turkish cuisine --Athene of Lymington 16:16, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
  • The laundry service here is the best we have ever encountered and laundry is usually returned the same day. --Athene of Lymington 08:54, 12 July 2011 (BST)
