Approach and Navigation

Easy entry. Red and Green lights at entrance to large harbour. Deep water, no bar.

Inside the harbour, the anchorage is the right (East) off the beach Praia Grande in good holding. Be aware however that a big tidal eddy around the bay means that often boats are pointing in completely different directions at the same time, so allow lots of room for swinging around.

The marina is to the left (West). Again, red and green lights on small poles at the ends of the floating breakwaters that run north and south. Enter between there, turn right, and dock on the right side (northern breakwater pontoon) for reception. Fuel is also available at the northern end of this pontoon.

Reception is the round yellow building at the end of the pontoon, open 8am to 8pm.

Check-in facilities (Customs and Immigration)

Reception is the yellow round building at the northern end of the northern breakwater floating pontoon. Dock on the inside of this pontoon until reception opens. There is a desk for immigration & customs inside the building, but I have never seen anyone there. Presumably they will be called if needed. One of the phone numbers provided outside the desk never gets answered, but the other two do.

NOTE: During low season they do NOT charge the normal 50% extra for catamarans, making this the cheapest marina for cats in the Iberian Peninsula. E.g. 2150 Euro for 6 months for a 12m cat, including all taxes and water and electricity.

Anchorages

  • FERRAGUDO World icon.png 37°07.45′N, 08°31.42′W - Just at the east side of the entrance. Is a good holding anchorage, well protected from the dominant winds. Marina de Portimao is very close in the opposite side of the Arade river. www.marinadeportimao.com.pt/

Yacht Repairs and Services

Marine Stores

Submit addresses and contact details of marine related businesses that are of interest to cruisers.

Repairs/Yards

Two small chandlers (Ondanautica and Sopramar) plus Bluewater Algarve which is a general fix-it / source-it type business. Sorpamar are useless at ordering stuff in. Bluewater, run by Brits, are excellent, and have a good machine shop for fabricating things. There is also a haulout facility.

Fuel, Water, & Electricity

Diesel, petrol (gasoline), water, and pump-out all available on the reception dock. They don't take credit cards!

Tourism and Things to do Ashore

Tourism

List places of interest, tours, etc.

Grocery & Supply Stores

  • Small supermarket behind the beach at the south end of the marina.
  • Big supermarkets (Continent, Pingo Doce) in town. Continent will deliver to the marina if you spend over 100 Euros. Get there by bus from the Tivoli hotel roundabout just outside the marina, or else dinghy about a mile upstream and dock just outside the museum, from where you can walk to the supermarkets.

Eateries

Lots of tourist restaurants along Praia do Rocha - a short walk from the marina.

Internet/WiFi

No marina wifi.

Inside the reception building is a desk that provides internet by cable for up to two laptops.

There is wifi available from Vodafone at a fee. Don't know the speed of that inside the marina. Outside at the anchorage it is desperately slow.

IN the anchorage, park yourself as close as you can to the Club Nau beach restaurant at the north end of the beach. With a wifi booster you can then hook into their free wifi at variable speeds - sometimes quite good, most of the time pretty slow, sometimes unusable.

Personally, I use an unlocked European cell phone (North American won't work), with a vodafone sim card, and a pay as you go data connection. Seems to work pretty well.

Laundry

Behind the reception building - 5 and 8 euros depending on size of load

Motorbike & Car Rentals

Car rentals available above the beach and in town. About 400 Euro a week.

Garbage Disposal

Lots of bins around the marina, along Praia da Rocha, and throughout the town. No charge.

Transportation

Transportation (local and/or international)

Routes/Passages To/From
