The harbour of Postira lies on the N coast of the island of Brac in Croatia, three miles E of the ferry port of Supetar. It is a pleasant stop when cruising the N coast of the island in settled weather, but the harbour quickly becomes uncomfortable in fresh to strong winds from NW and N, from which it offers minimal shelter.

Local Weather

Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

For sources of weather forecasting, see Croatia.

Approach and Navigation

The immediate approach to Postira is free of dangers. The end of the breakwater is marked with a white light tower with a conspicuous domed red top. Depths in the harbour are around 5.0 - 6.0 metres and on the quay 2.0 - 2.5 metres. Shelter is good in most conditions, but poor with any winds from NW or N.

Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)

Split is the nearest all-year round port of entry. During the summer, Hvar, Vis and, if arriving from N, Primosten on the mainland are also ports of entry.

Berthing options

The best position for a visiting yacht is alongside on the breakwater, the end of which is marked with a white light tower with a red domed top. At busy times, it may be necessary to use your anchor to go stern or bows-to. Depths here are 2.0 - 2.5 metres only, so this position will only suit shallow to moderate draft yachts. The holding is good in sand. This position is occasionally occupied by fishing or commercial boats and it is then a matter of squeezing in where you can. Shelter here is good in all but strong NW or N winds.

It may be possible in quiet periods to go alongside or stern/bows-to on the jetty S of the breakwater, though this is much used by tripper boats during the holiday season and you may be chased off. Depths here are 5.0 - 6.0 metres and the holding is good in sand.
