Florida ICW Bridge Schedule

Florida ICW Bridge Schedule and Regulations
Procedures
The bridges will have signs attached with the name of the bridge (or street crossing it), VHF channel to radio, bridge schedule, and maximum clearance gauge.
Florida Bridge operators monitor VHF Channel 9. Where the bridges are on a fixed schedule it is usually not necessary to signal with a horn or communicate via VHF, particularly if there are other boats circling waiting for the opening.
Opening bridges will have a maximum height gauge on the starboard side of the bridge fenders. This is at the lowest point of the bridge over the water. The signs on the bridge will indicate the highest point, which for many bascule bridges is four (4) feet higher in the center of the bridge. Note that the tide range on the ICW is approximately two to three feet (2 - 3 feet).

The signal to request opening of a drawbridge is one prolonged blast followed by one short blast. To contact a bridge with marine radio, use VHF 9 as a calling and working frequency. The bridge will also monitor channel 16.
BE ADVISED that opening schedules may change for bridge construction, maintenance, inclement weather conditions, or special events. Please contact the District or the U.S. Coast Guard for a listing of these temporary schedule changes.

Fixed bridges crossing the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway are not listed in this guide. All fixed bridges crossing the channel of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway in Florida have a clearance of 65 feet above MHW except the Julia Tuttle Causeway in Miami, which has a 56 foot clearance.
Horizontal clearance between fenders at most bridges is 90 feet, however, some bridges may be less. The Bridge of Lions and the Venetian Causeway have the least horizontal clearances.

ICW Regulations
For the most part, Florida has the least number of speed restricted zones within the ICW itself, but it strictly enforces the speed restrictions outside the marked channel in Manatee Zones.

On weekends the ICW is clogged with local boats out for the day. They find it difficult to obey No Wake regulations and generally haven't a clue how uncomfortable it is as they zoom past a sailboat. It is easier and more comfortable to travel during the week and take Saturday and Sunday and holidays as laydays.
Because there are so many boats in Florida, and the ICW is a sheltered haven for marinas, marinas with fuel and water are no more than 20 miles apart except in a few areas of the ICW.
