Background

Cagliari (Casteddu, the castle, in the Sardinian language) is the capital of Sardinia, the third largest island in the Mediterranean. It is a bustling port and industrial town of 170,000 inhabitants, albeit the old town is quite agreeable with its old unpretentious streets and excellent museum.

During prehistoric times Sardinia was populated by the Nuraghe. The most famous Nuraghe site is the complex of Su Nuraxi at Barumini in the province of Cagliari.

In antiquity Cagliari was a Phoenician colony known as Karalis. In 238 BC, after Carthage was defeated it became part of Rome. Later it was overrun by the Vandals and then became part of the Byzantine Empire. After numerous attacks by Moorish pirates it was abandoned for a period. In the 11th century the Pisan Republic conquered the region and re-built Cagliari. The fortifications that still surround the current district of Castello were built by the Pisans.

In the 14th century the Kingdom of Aragon conquered Cagliari after a battle against the Pisans and it became the administrative capital of the vice-kingdom of Sardinia, which later came under the rule of the Spanish empire. In the 18th century, after a brief rule of the Austrian Habsburgs, Cagliari and Sardinia came under the House of Savoy in 1720. From the 1870s Cagliari, and the rest of Sardinia, became part of Italy. The city was heavily damaged during WW II, being bombarded by the Allies.

The harbour of Cagliari offers a number of berthing options for yachts in a total of five marina operations in the harbour itself and a further three in the gulf of Cagliari within a twelve mile radius. It is a good base for visiting the exceptional Archaeological Museum of Cagliari or hiring a car or scooter for a visit to Su Nuraxi, the atmospheric plateau of the Giari di Gesturi or the Nuraghic sacred site of Santa Vittoria.

Approach

Warning: While the approaches to Cagliari are straightforward there can be violent winds in the Gulf of Cagliari.

Check-in facilities

There are five berthing possibilities in the harbour: the Marina di Bonaria (run by the Italian Lega Navale); the Marina del Sole (preferred by most yachts); the Marina di Sant’ Elmo (which has an associated yard); Port Karalis (more suited to larger yachts), and Motomar Sarda (for large yachts up to 35m).

Further away from Cagliari but within a twelve mile radius are the Marina di Capitana 12 miles to the east in the suburb of Capitana, the Marina Piccola Piccola Poetto at Poetto four miles SE of Cagliari and Marina Perd ‘E’ Sali at Sarroch about 11 miles south of Cagliari.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

IN CAGLIARI HARBOUR

Marina del sole

The Marina del Sole is the most suitable marina for all but the largest yachts. Situated due east of the harbour entrance, it offers 220 berths for yachts up to 30m. Depths in the marina are 7.5 to 9m. Water and electricity at all berths. Fuel station. Yachts up to 40 tonnes can be hauled out if required. Call on VHF channel 13. Telephone: +39 (0)70 308730. Website: www.marinasole-santelmo.com. E-mail: [email protected].

Marina di Bonaria (Su Siccu)

On the Siccu dock in Cagliari harbour, the Marina di Bonaria is due east of the entrance and immediately north of the Marina del Sole. It is run by the Italian Lega Navale and its 300 berths are reserved for members. Maximum length 30m. Depths 5 - 10m. Visiting yachts can sometimes be found a berth if available. Telephone: Italian Naval League +39 (0)70 300240.

Marina di Sant' Elmo

Marina S. Elmo is a new marina situated within the port of Cagliari at the root of the eastern breakwater. It consists of four floating pontoons and a quay with a total of 200 berths. Maximum length 36m. Water and electricity at all berths. Depths range from 1.5 to 9m. The marina is adjacent to a large boatyard of 12.600 square metres which can lift boats up to 30 tonnes and undertake most repairs. There are plans to complete a Club House with toilets, showers, dressing rooms, laundry, bar and restaurant. The club house is also planned to offer 12 guest-rooms and a luxury suite. Call on VHF channel 74. Telephone: +39 (0)70 344169. Website: www.marinasantelmo.it. E-mail: [email protected]

Port Karalis

The marina of Portus Karalis is located in the inner harbour of Cagliari and offers berthing for larger yachts and super yachts between 18 and 45 meters. Number of berths 140. Maximum length 90m. Depths from 4m to 10m. Water and electricity available. Call on VHF channel 74. Telephone: +39 (0)70 653535. E-mail: [email protected].

Motomar Sarda

Motomar Sarda is a dock for large yachts at the NW corner of the harbour. It offers 108 berths, of which 30 are supposedly for yachts in transit. Maximum length 35m. Depths from 1.6m to 3.5m. Water and electricity. Call on VHF channel 74. Telephone: +39 (0) 70 6051901. E-mail: [email protected].

IN GULF OF CAGLIARI

The Marina di Capitana

Marina di Capitana is a modern marina located on the southeastern coast of the Gulf of Cagliari, 12m east of Cagliari harbour. Entry is from the west. Once inside, the port is divided into two basins, the outer one reserved for larger vessels while the inner one houses smaller boats. Visitors normally berth on the inside of the southern breakwater. The harbour office is on the central pier dividing the two basins. Total berths 450. Maximum length 27m. Depths at quays 3m. Water and electricity. Travel lift. Some mechanical and electrical repairs. Call on channel 74 (0830 to 1930). Telephone: +39 (0)70 805460. E-mail: [email protected].

Perd ‘E’ Sali

The marina of Perd ‘E’ Sali is situated in the town of Sarroch, about 11 miles south of Cagliari. The marina is protected by two breakwaters enclosing five long pontoons with 256 berths. Visitors are normally directed to the first pontoon to port inside the entrance. Depths on the outer pontoons are from 2.5 to 3 m, and on the inner ones as little as 1.5 m. The marina is therefore unsuitable for larger, deep draught yachts. Maximum length 18m. Call on channel 74. Telephone: +39 (0)70 9253145. E-mail: [email protected].

Marina Piccola Poetto

Marina Piccola Poetto is situated four miles SE of Cagliari in the resort area of Poetto. Depths in the entrance are only 2.3m and therefore entry would be dangerous in any significant swell. Inside the breakwaters are pontoons with berths for 350, including 35 for vessels in transit. Maximum length 18m. Depths in the harbour range from 2.0m to 2.7m. Call on channel 74. Telephone: +39 (0)70 6051940. E-mail: [email protected].

Anchorages

No anchoring is permitted in the harbour. The nearest convenient anchorage in settled weather would appear to be off Poetto, well east of the new marina at Piccola Poetto (although it is rumoured anchoring here is discouraged owing to underwater cables).

Offshore Islands

None.

Tourism & things to do ashore

Café in the Esplanade
Click for larger view

Cagliari is a lively city and it is fun to sit at a café and watch the crowds go by. Within the city there are two places worth visiting: the Archeological Museum with many Nuraghi exhibits (including some wonderful bronze figurines), and the citadel and Casteddu from where there is a good view of the town.

Further afield, it is worth hiring transport to visit the Nuraghic site of Su Nuraxi at Barumini, the scenic and ageless plateau of the Giari di Gesturi, with its lakes and wild horses, and the Nuraghic sacred site of Santa Vittoria. See for further information: Sardinia.

Fuel, Water, & Electricity

All the marinas have water and electricity. Fuel pontoon on the western side of harbour.

Laundry

There is a coin (not paper money, it just consumes it) operated laundromat in a narrow street parallel to the esplanade and 3 blocks inland.

Grocery & Supply Stores

  • There are many stores
  • Few meters down the inner road parallel to the harbor towards N there is a good delicatessen
  • Buy the local Sardinian cheese & bread

Eateries

  • Good food in the Dal Conte restaurant (try the sea bass in wine and olive oil).
  • Ristorante Fabio is also good for lunch (try the spaghetti bottarga with clams and dried fish roe, followed by sebadas, pecorino-filled pastry fried and smothered with honey).
  • There is an outstanding restaurant specializing in Sardinian food (Sardi Tipico) about 60 km from Cagliari.

Internet/WiFi

In Cafés.

Motorbike & Car Rentals

There is one car rental agency operating out of the airport. Motorbike and sccoter hire at the harbour.

Marine Stores & Facilities

There is a chandlery some distance to the east of the harbour.

Repairs

Marina di Sant' Elmo has the largest yard, capable of most repairs, though other marinas can undertake limited repairs.

Transportation

There are daily flights to Rome and ferries to the mainland.
