The harbour of Sepurine, one of two harbours on Prvic Island in Croatia (the other being Prvic Luka), lies on the W coast of the island facing the island of Tijat a mile to the W. Sepurine was the family home of the renowned Croatian scholar and inventor Faust Vrancic, often described as the Croatian Leonardo da Vinci, whose 17th century masterwork, Machinae Novae, described inventions as varied as tide mills, suspension bridges and the parachute. The family’s mansion survives today, although the scholar’s remains are interred in the parish church of Prvic Luka. There is a very small and crowded harbour immediately S of the village, where a few yachts may be able to squeeze in alongside, and a jetty further S where a yacht can go alongside or stern/bows-to using the anchor. Shelter in the harbour is good in winds from N round to SE but poor with winds from NW round to S.

Local Weather

Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

For sources of weather forecasting, see Croatia.

Approach and Navigation

There are no dangers in the immediate approach to Sepurine. Depths in the harbour entrance are only 3.0 metres and depths are similar on the jetty S of the harbour. Sepurine is thus unsuitable for large or deep draft yachts.

Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)

Sibenik on the mainland is the nearest year-round port of entry.

Berthing options

There are just two berthing options in Sepurine, the old harbour and the jetty 200 metres S of the harbour. There is also an anchorage at U. Kobila 500 metres S of the old harbour. See below for details.

Old harbour

The old harbour of Sepurine, while the closest berthing option to the village, is both very cramped and quite shallow. The only berth suitable for a yacht is alongside the outer end of the breakwater at the entrance to the harbour, where there is room for 3-4 yachts alongside. Depths here are 3.0 metres but shoal to only 2.0 metres once past the ‘elbow’. Shelter in this position is good in all but strong W and SW winds. There are no facilities on the quay.

Jetty

There is room for 3-4 yachts to berth alongside (or more if stern/bows-to using the anchor) on the N side of the jetty 200 metres S of the old harbour. Depths here range from 2.0 metres at the root to 3.0 metres at the end. Shelter here is adequate in winds from N round to SE but poor in winds from NW round to SW. Berths here can be affected by the afternoon sea breeze, which blows from NW.

The anchorage of U. Kobila lies 500 metres S of the harbour of Sepurine, inside the headland of Rt. Kobila, and offers reasonable shelter with moderate winds from E or S but is completely open with anything N or W in the wind. It is also quite shallow and it is necessary to anchor some way out to find good depths. Anchor in 4.0 - 5.0 metres about 100 metres offshore. The holding is good in sand and weed. The anchorage should only be used in settled weather.
