The town and port of Agropoli lie on the Tyrrhenian coast of Italy some 27 miles SSE of Salerno and six miles S of the World Heritage Site of Paestum. The town developed during the late Roman period, largely due to the silting up of the ancient Greek harbour of Poseidonia (subsequently renamed Paestum by the Romans). The site was originally fortified as a harbour by the Byzantines in the 6th century AD. The naturally well-protected town passed through a succession of hands (including Saracens from North Africa) until Italian unification in the 19th century. Today its small harbour is a useful port of call for cruising yachts wishing to visit the ruins of Paestum.

Local Weather

Winds along the Tyrrhenian Coast of Italy are generally light in the summer months. The most notable feature is a SW seabreeze that kicks in in late morning and blows at little more than Force 2 - 4 until the evening. Thundery conditions are not infrequent during early Spring and Autumn, and associated winds can sometimes reach gale force and kick up a substantial sea. In winter, gales can blow from both NW and S and entry to and exit from some of the harbours along the coast can become hazardous.

Sources for weather information:

  • There is a continuous (computerised voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation.
  • The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16.
  • Navtex weather forecasts are broadcast from stations at La Garde (Toulon), Roma and Cagliari (Sardinia).

Approach and Navigation

The harbour of Agropoli lies immediately W of a high bluff on which the old town is built. An old lighthouse atop a square crenellated tower is conspicuous half a mile ENE of the entrance. The harbour is entered from NE.

Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)

Five pontoons have been laid out from the harbour mole in depths of 5.0 - 6.0 metres and a further eight from the quay along the shore in depths of 1.0 - 3.0 metres. The pontoons are effectively reserved for private berthholders and members of the Italian Lega Navale. The transit berths are at the end of the breakwater, where you will need to anchor moor stern or bows-to the quay. There is space for up to 15 yachts here, maximum length 50 metres. Shelter is reasonably good in all winds except NE.

Tourism and Things to do Ashore

Tourism

The mediaeval old town, full of steep, narrow alleys, is fun to explore. At the top is the town’s castle, constructed in the 16th century on Byzantine foundations. There are some pleasant walks along the coast, with views as far as Vesuvius on a clear day. But the chief attraction of Agropoli is the nearby site of Paestum six miles to the north, with its superb 5th and 6th century BC temples and excellent museum containing fascinating tomb paintings from the late Lucanian civilisation, including the well-known ‘Tomb of the Diver’ featuring a symbolic ‘dive’ into the afterlife, and several carved metopes from the Temple of Hera.
