The tiny harbour of Diamante lies 24 miles S of Maratea on the Tyrrhenian coast of Italy, along the ‘instep’ of the peninsula. The harbour consists of little more than a short, curved breakwater giving some protection from winds from N/NW. However, the harbour is completely open to winds from W round to SE and should only be used in settled weather. During the summer months a series of short pontoons are installed behind the breakwater offering berths for around 100 vessels of up to 18 metres.

Local Weather

Winds along the Tyrrhenian Coast of Italy are generally light in the summer months. The most notable feature is a SW seabreeze that kicks in in late morning and blows at little more than Force 2 - 4 until the evening. Thundery conditions are not infrequent during early Spring and Autumn, and associated winds can sometimes reach gale force and kick up a substantial sea. In winter, gales can blow from both NW and S and entry to and exit from some of the harbours along the coast can become hazardous. Sources for weather information:

  • There is a continuous (computerised voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation.
  • The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16.
  • Navtex weather forecasts are broadcast from stations at La Garde (Toulon), Roma and Cagliari (Sardinia).

Approach and Navigation

The harbour is immediately SE of Punta di Diamante. In the approach from N, the islet of Isola di Cirella just over one mile N should be left to port. Punta di Diamante should be given a clearance of at least 200 metres to avoid the rocky shoals. The rough breakwater and the tiled roofs of the town are conspicuous once close in.

Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)

During the summer four pontoons are installed off the short stub quay inside the breakwater. Visiting yachts of up to 18 metres berth bows or stern-to the pontoons using their anchors. Depths at the pontoons are from 1.5 metres inshore to 4.0 metres at the end. Ostensibly 10 spaces are allocated to yachts in transit. Some water and electricity points on the pontoons.
