A red and white buoy marks the best water at the entrance. Entry should not be attempted in strong onshore winds. El Rompido is a small village, now developed into a holiday centre, on the north bank of the Rio Piedras, which enters the sea 16 miles east of the Spanish/Portuguese border. The river estuary is relatively shallow and not to be attempted at low water or with any onshore winds. However, it is a very beautiful and peaceful area and the trip upriver to the Marina El Rompido is rewarded with wonderful views of the dunes and wildlife of the sandy peninsula protecting the river.
