Port de Goro is a reef enclosed bay at the SE corner of Grande Terre on the north side of the Havannah Pass. The area is relatively exposed to the prevailing SE winds and so is best as an anchorage in westerly winds. There is a small settlement in the area, but no shops or other facilities. The prime reasons for visiting this bay are the large waterfall, the mining ruins and the diving on the outer reef.

Cruising the region

Port Goro is the first anchorage inside Havannah Pass. You must clear Customs in Noumea before stopping anywhere in New Caledonia, so, unfortunately, stopping here when inbound is not an option.

The Cruising Guide to New Caledonia mentions Chief Attiti as a contact. Sadly Charles Attiti passed away in 2004. His grave can be found a short walk from the anchorage at Port Boise.

Weather

Sources for Weather forecasts:
Local forecasts are, of course, in French, but non-French speakers should find them relatively easy to understand. A very useful vocabulary can be found at How to Understand French Weather Forecasts for Sailors.

The main source of weather information for the area around New Caledonia is Meteo France Nouvelle-Calédonie. The marine section provides a 6 day forecast for the whole region, with details for each of the passes through the barrier reef.

Nouméa radio broadcasts the weather report in French on VHF 16, everyday at 6:30, 9:30, 15:15, 18:30.

There is a set of repeater channels allowing receipt of weather info anywhere in the country:

Navigation

There are two entrances to Port de Goro, Passe de Toemo and Passe de Goro.

Passe de Tomeo is the recommended entrance and is the first entrance you reach if coming from the west. It is well marked and there is a clear channel to the anchorage.

Passe de Goro has the Goro light on the eastern side. This light also marks the northern side of Havannah Pass. Passe de Goro is well marked, but after passing through, you need to exercise caution in crossing Port de Goro to the anchorage as there are coral heads and shoal areas in the lagoon.

Anchorages

• Anchor immediately off the obvious waterfall. Be cautious not to go too far north or east as this area is surrounded by coral and you quickly run out of navigable water. If you go ashore directly in front of the waterfall, there is a dinghy entrance to a tiny inlet where you can leave your dinghy. This is next to the road and the waterfall is on the other side of the road.
