Maronia

Background

Maronia (Μαρώνεια) is in a delightful peninsula in Thrace between Porto Lago and Alexandroupolis.

The approaches to Maronia are straight forward.

Ports and Popular Stops

Maronia Harbor

The small harbor [40° 52.6' N 25° 30.5 E] of Maronia is a delightful place. There is 4-5 m depth along the W breakwater, inside the harbor, to tie side-to. Good shelter from the meltemi.

Danger: The foundations of the ancient harbor are just below the surface right in the middle of the port and E of the breakwater.

Anchorages

Coves E of the Harbor

There are some nice coves W of the Maronia Peninsula. We spend the night in one [40° 52' N 25° 35.2' E] at 6 m depth and were reasonably well sheltered from the meltemi although there was some swell. On our way E we saw another cove about 1 M further towards Alexandroupolis.

Tourism & things to do ashore

There are several excavated sites within easy walking distance from the harbor. The Ancient Theater is about 3 km away and Mesimvria about 6 km of very rough dirt road (easier to visit from the sea in settled weather).

The delightful village of Modern Maronia is about 4 km uphill from the harbor.
