Mudanya

The city of Mudanya (Greek τα Μουδανιά) lies on the southern shores of the Sea of Marmara, three miles E of Zeytinbagi and 13 miles W of the busy industrial port of Gemlik. A busy commercial centre and important ferry terminal, until recent years yachts could only moor in part of the commercial harbour, which was usually filled with local boats. Now, however, a new harbour is in operation in a residential area a mile W of the old commercial harbour. The southern half is occupied by small fishing vessels on pontoons, while the northern half, along the breakwater, has laid moorings for around 100 yachts in good shelter. Depths in the harbour are 4.5 – 5.0 metres and in the entrance 4.0 – 5.0 metres.

The prevailing winds are N/NE. During settled periods, an afternoon sea breeze sets into the gulf from WSW and a land breeze from ENE during the night.

Navigation

Mudanya harbour is entered from ESE. The long breakwater, oriented E-W, and the numerous yacht masts along it are clearly visible from distance. Depths in the entrance are a minimum of 4.5 metres and between 4.5 and 5.0 metres along the quay.

Berthing Options

All the moorings in the harbour are private, many of them occupied by members of the local sailing club. However, there are usually one or two free at any time and the very friendly assistant employed by the Mudanya Belideyesi (municipality) will usually help a visiting yacht moor. All moorings have pick up buoys and you will need a long line to pass through the eye of the buoy before reversing back to the quay. Take care in approaching the quay as there is rip rap that may keep you 2m off the dock. The assistant’s office is on the first floor of the building at the root of the breakwater, next to the conspicuous Mudanya Restaurant and Otel.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

• Mudanya Yelken Kulubu (Mudanya Sailing Club)Tel 0 224 544 28 08. Most of the private yachts moored in the harbour are members of this club. There is a small clubhouse in a low building at the end of the breakwater and a more substantial clubhouse on the ground floor of an apartment building opposite the harbour.

Anchorages

No safe alternative anchorages. However, if Mudanya and Zeytinbagi are both full, there is a small harbour between the two ports at the village of Kumkaya which is used by yachts. No details are available of depths or mooring arrangements.

The walk east along the waterfront is well worthwhile. The route passes through a residential district with some lovely old Ottoman houses, many of them beautifully restored.
