Niuatoputapu is located in the north of Tonga, 300 km away from Vava'u. It is the closest island (other than Niuafo'ou Island to Samoa and is often used as the first stop when approaching Tonga from the north. Niuatoputapu along with Niuafo'ou Island and the small island of Tafahi form the administrative division of the Niuas. There is an airport in Niuatoputapu.
The people are reportedly friendly and welcoming to cruisers.
