The town of Oeiras is situated at the mouth of the River Tejo in Portugal on the north coast of the estuary, roughly equidistant from Cascais and Lisbon. The town’s foundation dates from 1759, when the lands were given to Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, first minister to King Jose I of Portugal, in recognition of his sterling work to reconstruct the capital, Lisbon, and rebuild the Portuguese economy following the disastrous earthquake of 1755. Taking the title of Count of Oeiras, he was later further ennobled as Marquis de Pombal, by which title he is better known. The magnificent palace he built here, the Palace of the Counts of Oeiras, survives today and now houses the Portuguese National Institute of Administration. The appearance of Oeiras on the yachting horizon dates from 2006, with the construction of a small, modern marina in the town just east of the Renaissance fort of São Julião da Barra. Oeiras now offers a useful alternative to Cascais for cruising yachtsmen reluctant to brave the shallow banks of the Rio Tejo and berth amid the noise and bustle of Lisbon itself.

Tourism

Oeiras holds little to attract the yachting tourist compared with Lisbon only 12km to the east. Even the Palace of the Counts of Oeiras is only open to organised tours on one Sunday a month. There are regular trains to Lisbon along the coast (travelling time 15 minutes).

Base to visit Sintra, the summer get-away of the Portuguese Royal family in past centuries. It is an amazing place, a must see. The marina offers shuttles (prize of a taxi) --Sy-yemanja 21:50, 10 September 2014 (BST)
