Palau, Sardinia
Palau, Sardinia
| |
Palau is a small harbour on the NE coast of Sardinia, some five miles NNW of Cannigione and immediately opposite the Maddalena group, for which it is the main ferry port. The harbour contain a secure marina, Puerto Palau, with around 400 berths for yachts of up to 18.0 metres. It is a good base for planning a visit to the national park of the Maddalena Islands and for exploring some of the impressive Nuraghic remains around Arzachena.

Local Weather
The harbour offers good all-round shelter from all directions except NE, from which direction it is partly protected by the Maddalena Islands. Gusts are possible from any direction in the approaches in view of the high land to either side.
The entrance to the harbour is to the S of a large ferry quay, which is also used by naval vessels, and will not be seen until almost past the harbour if approaching from N. Beware of ferries arriving and departing at speed. The entrance is approached from SE, when the mast of yachts on the marina pontoons will be visible.

Tourism
Palau is a secure spot to leave your yacht for a tour of some of the interesting Nuraghic remains for which the Arzachena area is renowned, especially the fortified dwelling of Nuraghe Malchittu, with its unusual passage construction; the ‘giants’ tombs’ of Coddu Ecchiu and Li Lolghi and the necropolis of I’Muri (which features Neolithic box tombs with concentric circles and stelae). Other locations worth visiting include the village of Luogosanto, nestling on top of a mountain, and the impressively sited village of Aggius, wedged between huge piles of solid granite. From there, one can continue through the Valle della Luna, an amazing gorge flanked by massive pillars of solid granite.
