The town of Poros and its large purpose-built harbour are situated towards the SE end of the island of [[Kefalonia]] in [[Greece]], some 10 miles SE of [[Sami]] and 15 miles due E of [[Argostoli]] (though more like 25 from the latter by sea).  The harbour is mainly a ferry and commercial port, but there is space for yachts at the SW side of the harbour, where around 15-20 yachts can moor using their anchors in depths varying from 2.5 to 4.0 metres.  Shelter in the harbour is moderate to good, depending on wind conditions, but the prevailing NW winds do send in an uncomfortable, reflected swell if they are of any strength.  Nevertheless, Poros make a useful port of call to break the long sail from [[Ayia Eufimia]] or [[Sami]] to or from the Gulf of [[Argostoli]].

The yacht quay extends along the SE side of the harbour and is marked with yellow paint along its edge.  As mentioned above, approach should be made close to the W breakwater that protects the quay from N to avoid the shallower water to the SE.  Around 15 – 20 yachts can anchor moor at the quay here in depths ranging from 4.0 metres at the N end to 2.25 metres at the S end.  The holding is good in soft mud once the anchor is well dug in, but it can require two or three attempts to make sure it is holding.  Shelter on the quay is only moderate from the prevailing NW winds and can become uncomfortable (though rarely untenable) with reflected swell if they are of any strength.  See [https://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msid=210561298658189797082.0004de1befb31a92c69e2&msa=0&ll=38.146851,20.779948&spn=0.002451,0.004823 Interactive map of berthing options] for further details.

The town of Poros and its large purpose-built harbour are situated towards the SE end of the island of Kefalonia in Greece, some 10 miles SE of Sami and 15 miles due E of Argostoli (though more like 25 from the latter by sea). Nevertheless, Poros make a useful port of call to break the long sail from Ayia Eufimia or Sami to or from the Gulf of Argostoli.

Navigation

There are no hazards in the approach to Poros, as long as the harbour is entered close to the tip of the E breakwater (which has a red port marker on it). There are shallows extending around 100 metres off the W shore (conveniently, there is a very conspicuous rock marking them). Once past the E breakwater, a course should be shaped to pass 15-20 metres off the inside of the shorter W breakwater to stay in the deepest water. The SE side of the harbour shoals to 2.0 metres or less towards the entrance of the tiny inner fishing boat harbour.

Entrance

Argostoli or Sami are the nearest ports of entry. See relevant port page for details.

Yacht Quay

See Interactive map of berthing options for further details.

Breakwater

It is possible with care to lie alongside (or, at busy periods, anchor moor to) the outer half of the breakwater. The inner half has rock ballasting along it and, if you anchor moor here, you will need to take lines ashore in your dinghy). The quay is very high here and there are only a few mooring staples and cleats along the sides and top. The best position is alongside the steps, where it is easier to get on and off your yacht.
