Porto Rotondo

Porto Rotondo is a smart, purpose-built marina and residential development on the famous Costa Smeralda of Sardinia between Punta Nuraghe and Punta Volpe about five miles south of the Maddalena archipelago. Although less famous than its upmarket neighbour Porto Cervo 15 miles to the north, it is in many ways a less pretentious and architecturally more attractive haven for a yacht cruising the NE coast of Sardinia. Developed from the 1960s onwards by a Venetian-led consortium, the harbour has a decidedly Venetian flavour to it - the main square is even called Piazzetta San Marco.

Islands

There are three small islands, Isola Soffi, Isola Le Camere and Ilosa Mortorio, five miles to the NNE. The islands are a lesser-known part of the Maddalena Archipelago National Park.

Communication

Navigation

The approach is free from dangers, although strong northerlies send a swell down into the entrance. A course of 130 degrees leads straight through the entrance.

Berthing

The entire inlet is organised as a marina.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

The Marina di Porto Rotondo has a total of 650 berths on concrete quays, of which 65 are supposedly reserved for yachts in transit. Depths range from 1.0 - 6.0 metres. Yachts of up to 80 metres can be accommodated (although the very biggest yacths will be berthed on the outside quay). The marina offers a full range of services, including water and electricity at all berths, WCs and showers, slipway, crane (5T) and travel lift (20T) and fuel station.

For berthing, call Marina di Porto Rotondo on VHF channel 9. Telephone: +39 (0)789 34203; E-mail.

Anchorages

There are several anchorages to the west of Porto Rotondo in the Gulf of Cugnana and to the east in the Gulf of Marinella. The anchorages get very busy in high season. Less busy and better sheltered is the delightful Cala di Volpe five miles to the north, where a yacht can anchor in 5.0 -10.0 metres of crystal clear water over a white sand bottom.
