The small harbour of Porto San Vito lies at the W extremity of the town of Grado on the lagoon of the same name, 11 miles E of Lignano and five miles SW of Monfalcone on the northern Adriatic coast of Italy. A hotel and leisure development as well as a marina, it offers 165 berths for yachts up to 20 metres in depths of 3.0 - 3.5 metres.

Marina radio contact

Try calling Porto San Vito on VHF channel 09 or 16. You may have better luck if you telephone or email in advance for berthing information and reservations. Alternatively berth on the concrete quay to starboard in the entrance where it says 'Transito' (towards the inner end as the outer end is shallow) and walk round to find the ormeggiator.

Navigation/Approach

The entrance to the Grado lagoon lies at World icon.png 45°39.6′N, 13°20.9′E, where there is a red fairway buoy just under two miles offshore. Dangerous sandbanks extend for almost two miles on both sides of the entrance, so approach is only safe from this buoy, near high water and in settled weather. Approach should be made on a course of 040 degrees. The entrance channel, which is dredged to a depth of just 3.0 metres, is marked by piles on either side. Once inside the entrance, the channel forks. Take the starboard channel and the entrance to Porto San Vito is a further 200 metres on starboard side. The basin is entered from NE. Depths in the basin are 3.0 – 3.5 metres but can be as little as 2.5 metres at low water in the entrance.

Berthing

Berth on the concrete quay to starboard just inside the entrance and walk round to find the ormeggiator to be assigned a berth. Space is limited in the marina and it is wise to book ahead via telephone or email at busy periods. Berths are bows or stern-to on a series of pontoons and associated quays with mooring posts for your stern or bow lines. The berths are not very long, and it is usually necessary to take springs from midships to the posts to hold you off the pontoon and to allow for the rise and fall of tide (which is often a metre or more). Berthing assistance available if required.

  • A rather small and cramped marina, but with excellent facilities and very quiet. --Athene of Lymington
