Visiting yachts are normally directed to berth bows or stern-to the outer end of the breakwater mole. You will need to use your anchor here. There is a ledge and some ballasting at this end of the mole, so bows-to is better unless your rudder draught is very modest. If possible, try to negotiate a berth further into the harbour.   Alternatively, a shallow-draught yacht can try to negotiate a berth on the quays or the inner pier, although these are usually filled with local boats. Depths are 6.0 - 8.0 metres along the breakwater (although 2.0 - 2.5 metres only at the outer end due to the ledge) and 2.0 metres on the quays. There are no facilities in the harbour.

Scario harbour from the NE

The small harbour of Porto Scario lies on the W side of the Golfo di Policastro on the Tyrrhenian coast of Italy, along with the ‘instep’ of the peninsula. The harbour is relatively shallow, although the entrance is deeper than that of Camerota. It provides a total of around 160 berths for vessels of up to 30 metres along its breakwater and quays. Shelter in the harbour is good, although strong southerlies cause an uncomfortable swell.

Weather

Winds along the Tyrrhenian Coast of Italy are generally light in the summer months. The most notable feature is a SW sea breeze that kicks in in late morning and blows at little more than Force 2 - 4 until the evening. Thundery conditions are not infrequent during early Spring and Autumn, and associated winds can sometimes reach gale force and kick up a substantial sea. In winter, gales can blow from both NW and S and entry to and exit from some of the harbours along the coast can become hazardous.

Sources for weather information:

  • There is a continuous (computerized voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation
  • The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16
  • Navtex weather forecasts are broadcast from stations at La Garde (Toulon), Roma and Cagliari (Sardinia)

Passages

See Mediterranean.

Communication

Add here VHF channel for the coastguard, harbor masters. etc.

Also see World Cruiser's Nets.

Navigation

There are no dangers in the approaches. A lighthouse is conspicuous at the SW end of the harbour. The harbour is entered from NE and has depths of 7.0 metres in the entrance.

Berthing

June 2015. We were directed to a berth labelled with the co-op name and handed Lazy Lines by the attendant. The marina is run by the Co-op. The office is to the left of the exit from the harbour area, about 50m. We paid Euro 50 per night at the end of June for a 12m. There is a Lega Navale chapter on the quay side of the harbour. --Hogesinwa
