Harbour of Prvic Luka from W

The harbour of Prvic Luka, one of two harbours on Prvic Island in Croatia (the other being Sepurine), lies at the S end of the island opposite the small islet of Lupac and the larger island of Zlarin to the SE. Its main claim to fame is as the burial place of the renowned Croatian scholar and inventor Faust Vrancic, often described as the Croatian Leonardo da Vinci, whose 17th century masterwork, Machinae Novae, described inventions as varied as tide mills, suspension bridges and the parachute.

The small harbour has laid moorings along the inside of its breakwater for around 10-12 yachts berthed stern or bows-to. Water and electricity connection points are available along the breakwater quay. Shelter in the harbour is good in all but strong S and SE winds.

Weather

Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

Navigation

There are no dangers in the immediate approach to Prvic Luka, although note that there is a shoal patch to be avoided half way between Lupac islet and Zlarin and another half a mile due S of the entrance to Prvic Luka inlet. Depths in the entrance to the inlet are 12-14 metres and in the harbour 5.0 - 6.0 metres.

Entrance

Sibenik on the mainland is the nearest year-round port of entry.

There are laid moorings for 10-12 yachts along the inside of the harbour breakwater, which extends SW from the E side of the inlet. There is a green light structure on the end of the breakwater. Shelter here is good in all but strong S and SE winds, which cause a considerable swell.

Depths along the breakwater range from 2.5 metres at the root to 3.0 metres at the end.

Note: ferry's berth at the tip of the breakwater.

There are water and electricity points along the breakwater and a small toilet and shower block.
