Description, etc.
+
The small harbour of Rio Marina is situated on the east coast of Elba, roughly halfway between the small and shallow harbour of Cavo and Porto Azzuro. The slopes behind the harbour are disfigured  by several hundred years of open-cast mining.  While not unattractive, the village is a very dusty place.  Yachts either anchor moor to the quay or berth at the long pontoons (summer only) if there is space.  Shelter is poor in winds from N to NE.

Local Weather

The harbour is sheltered from the prevailing NW winds and southerly sea breezes, but if the wind goes east it is probably wise to get out, especially if there is any strength in it.

Sources for Weather forecasts:

  • There is a continuous (computerised voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation.
  • The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16.
  • Navtex weather forecasts are broadcast from stations at Roma, Cagliari (Sardinia) and Augusta (Sicily).

Approach and Navigation

The pontoons are operated by Rio Service (telephone: +39 0565 925050), which also operates a small boatyard. Maximum length 15 metres. If on the quay, avoid the sections marked in black and yellow, which are reserved for the ferries and fishing boats.
