The small harbour of Rio Marina is situated on the east coast of Elba, roughly halfway between the small and shallow harbour of Cavo and Porto Azzuro. The slopes behind the harbour are disfigured by several hundred years of open-cast mining. While not unattractive, the village is a very dusty place. Yachts either anchor moor to the quay or berth at the long pontoons (summer only) if there is space. Shelter is poor in winds from N to NE.

Local Weather
The harbour is sheltered from the prevailing NW winds and southerly sea breezes, but if the wind goes east it may be wise to get out, especially if there is any strength in it.
Sources for Weather forecasts:
- There is a continuous (computerised voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation.
- The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16.
- Navtex weather forecasts are broadcast from stations at Roma, Cagliari (Sardinia) and Augusta (Sicily).
The remains of the open cast mines are unmissable behind the village.
Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)
Anchor moor on the quay at the SE end of the harbour. Depths here are 3.0 - 4.0 metres. There are supposedly 15 berths for yachts in transit. Alternatively, seek a berth on the pontoons, which are in place during the summer months only. The pontoons are operated by Rio Service (telephone: +39 0565 925050), which also operates a small boatyard. Maximum length 15 metres. If on the quay, avoid the sections marked in black and yellow, which are reserved for the ferries and fishing boats.

Rio Service (see contact details above). Crane (45T) and boat transporter (30T). Yachts of up to 20 tonnes can be stored ashore. Services include keel cleaning and sandblasting, anti-osmosis treatment, sandblasting, marine painting and boat polishing, as well as mechanical, electrical, upholstering, refrigeration and hydraulic systems servicing.

Fuel by jerry can from garage in town. Water and electricity, showers and toilets on the Rio Service pontoons. Water but no electricity on the quay.
