San Leone is a small ‘porto turistico’ harbour about four miles east of the commercial harbour of Porto Empedocle (Agrigento). Although the town itself is not especially interesting, it is a useful secure base for a yacht crew wishing to visit the World Heritage Site of Agrigentum and its magnificent Greek Doric temples.

Local Weather

The prevailing wind on the south coast of Sicily during the summer is a SW seabreeze, which rarely gets up much above force 4-5. Most of the harbours along the south coast are liable to swell in strong southerly winds which are, however, rare outside the winter months.

Sources for weather forecasts:

  • There is a continuous (computerised voice) weather forecast on VHF 68 - first in Italian and then followed with an English translation.
  • The same forecast is given in Italian and English on VHF coastal stations following a notification on channel 16.
  • Navtex weather forecasts are broadcast from stations at Roma, Cagliari (Sardinia) and Augusta (Sicily).

Approach and Navigation

There no hazards in the approach, although a swell builds up in the entrance during strong SE winds. The harbour is entered from due E between the breakwaters. Depths in the entrance are 2.5 - 4.0 metres - the deeper water being just to the right of the centre. Entry could be dangerous in a particularly heavy swell, when Porto Empedocle would be a safer bet.

Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)

The harbour provides a total of 480 berths on eight pontoons. Maximum length 18.0 metres. On entry, try calling Porto Turistico on VHF channel 74. Otherwise, berth wherever there is room and try to locate someone official. The innermost pontoon at the NE end of the harbour is reportedly for visitors. There are laid moorings at all berths and water and electricity on the pontoons. WC in the NE corner of the harbour.

Offshore Islands and Groups

None.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

None.

Anchorages

Nearest alternative anchorage is at Porto Empedocle, where is it possible to anchor in the outer harbour in 4.0 - 5.0 metres in mud. Shelter here is rather poor in southerly winds.

Marine Stores

Submit addresses and contact details of marine related businesses that are of interest to cruisers.

Repairs/Yards

Slipway, stationery and mobile cranes. Limited engine and electrical repairs.

Fuel, Water, & Electricity

Tourism and Things to do Ashore

Tourism

The main attraction in the area is the ancient Greek city of Akragas, better known under its later Roman name of Agrigentum. The Valle dei Temple (Valley of the Temples) here contains the remains of five Doric temples along a ridge overlooking the modern city of Agrigento. Of the five temples, the most complete is the Temple of Concord, built around 440 BC.
