The village and small harbour of Silo is situated on the NE coast of the island of Krk in Croatia, two miles SE of the landlocked inlet of Zaton Soline and and a similar distance SW of the mainland town of Crikvenica. The harbour is at the head of a wide bay, Uvala Stipanja, which is protected on its E side by a long, narrow spit. There is a tiny and shallow marina at the root of the spit, which is invariably filled to capacity with local motor boats, and a small harbour E of the village itself which offers some protection from northerly winds behind a short breakwater.

Local Weather
Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.
Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.
For sources of weather forecasting, see Croatia.
There are no dangers in the approach to Silo, but note that if approaching from S or E that a shallow patch extends off Rt Silo, the spit that encloses the bay on the E side, for some 200 metres.
Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)
Silo is not a port of entry. The nearest port of entry is Rijeka.
Berthing options
The best berth for a visiting yacht (if there is space) is alongside on the S side of the breakwater on the W side of the bay, close to the village of Silo itself. Depths at the breakwater are between 2.5 metres at the root and 4.0 metres at the end. There is underwater rock ballasting in parts. Shelter here is good from most directions, although strong N to NW winds would probably make it untenable.
Offshore Islands and Groups
Marinas & Yacht Clubs
Silo Marina - shallow and usually filled by local motor boats.
Anchorages
Anchor in the bay E of Silo harbour, wherever there is space. Depths are mostly 5.0 - 10.0 metres and the holding is good in mud. Shelter is good in winds from E through S round to W but poor in notherlies.
