The harbour of Splitska lies on the N coast of the island of Brac in Croatia, two miles E of the ferry port of Supetar and one mile W of Postira. The harbour has a long history, being the principal harbour used for the transport of the stone used to build the palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian in Split at the beginning of the 4th century AD. The bay of U. Splitska divides into two inlets, the E one of which contains the main harbour and the W one offers a narrow but useful anchorage. The harbour and anchorage are both well sheltered in all but winds from NW round NE.

Local Weather

Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

For sources of weather forecasting, see Croatia.

Approach and Navigation

The immediate approach to Splitska is free of dangers. There is a light structure on the E headland of the inlet. Depths in the inlet are 8.0 - 10.0 metres and at the town quay in the E branch of the inlet 2.0 - 3.0 metres. Shelter is good in most conditions, but poor with any winds from NW round to NE.

Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)

Split is the nearest all-year round port of entry. During the summer, Hvar, Vis and, if arriving from N, Primosten on the mainland are also ports of entry.

Berthing options

The E branch of the inlet where the town lies is quayed around its head. There are numerous small craft moorings along the quays, but it is possible with care to go alongside on the end of the two short piers which extend out in front of the town. Depths are 3.0 metres on the more northerly pier and 2.0 - 2.5 metres on the southerly one. If the quay is very busy, it may be necessary to go stern or bows-to using your anchor (which may be dictated by your draft anyway). The holding is good in sand and weed. Shelter here is good in all but strong NW or N winds.

Marinas & Yacht Clubs

None.

Anchorages

The W branch of the inlet is a useful anchorage in all but N winds. Depths here range from 10 - 12 metres at the entrance to 3.0 - 4.0 metres at the head. Anchor in suitable depths wherever you can find space. Holding is good in sand and weed. Shelter is good in all but strong N or NE winds.

Yacht Repairs and Services

None.

Fuel, Water, & Electricity

No fuel berth. Water and electricity on the town quay.

Tourism

The parish church is a conspicuous sight on the waterfront. Originally built in the 13th century, the current church is a Baroque specimen from the 16th and 17th centuries. Inside is an altarpiece painted by the Venetian artist Leadro Bassano in 1577. In the Rasohe stone quarry near the town is a relief carving of Heracles thought to have been carved by slaves working the quarry during Roman times.
