Diurnal winds along the coast are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5.  At night, katabatic winds off the mountains are a feature of some of the harbours along the NE Adriatic coast.  During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas.  In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the ''bora'', is much to be feared, especially along the Velebitski channel.  It tends to blow less strongly S of Zadar.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the ''scirocco'', a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean.  Unlike the ''bora'', the ''scirocco'' only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

The inner harbour of Trpanj from NE

Trpanj lies on the W side of the Neretvanski Kanal, the channel between the mainland and the Peljesac Peninsula on the Adriatic coast of Croatia, around 11 miles NW of the small harbour of Drace and eight miles W of the commercial port of Ploce on the opposite side of the channel.

Trpanj is a popular holiday resort, boosted by a regular ferry service from Ploce, and has a harbour which offers good shelter in the prevailing winds.

The statue of Our Lady, Trpanj
Trpanj entrance from SW

The harbour of Trpanj consists of a long outer breakwater constructed either side of a rocky islet and a small inner harbour protected from W by an L-shaped breakwater. On the top of the island is a conspicuous statue of our Lady of the Sea which helps identify the harbour from distance. In the approach, note that there is an isolated shallow patch with less than 4.0 metres over it about half a mile WNW of the harbour entrance. An approach from just E of due N avoids the patch. The harbour is entered from SW around the W end of the long breakwater. The breakwater has a light structure, Fl R 4secs on it. Beware of ferries leaving at speed as you round the breakwater.

Berthing

The waterfront of Trpanj

The most sheltered position is on the quay at the S end of the inner harbour, 50 metres W of the ferry pier. Go stern/bows-to using your anchor. Depths along this quay are 3.0 - 5.0 metres. The depths decrease the closer you get to the ferry pier and are less than 2.0 metres on the E side of the pier. Alternatively, go stern/bows-to the breakwater, where there are depths of 7.0 - 8.0 metres. Shelter is less good here, especially with anything W in the wind, and you will need to use your dinghy to get ashore.
