Uturoa, Raiatea, is the second largest town in French Polynesia after the capital, Papeete, although it is very much smaller.

Navigation

Approaching Uturoa is relatively simple -- all dangers are marked. See also Raiatea and the notes for any marina being entered, e.g. Marina Apooiti.

Entrance

Uturoa is a port of entry via the local Gendarmerie but final clearance needs to be done in Papeete. See the section on French Polynesia for further details.

Berthing

There are two basic options for berthing in Uturoa:

  • Marina Apooiti, about 5km to the west of the town.
  • Berthing temporarily outside the main wharf of the town.

There are anchorage areas to the west and north of the town but be aware that there is a large no-anchor zone in the vicinity of the nearby airport.

Things to do Ashore

Tourism

Several tour operators run from Uturoa. There is a tourist information office near the main wharf, check there for the latest details and any advertised specials.

Grocery & Supply Stores

There are 3 supermarkets of varying sizes within the town. There is also a fresh produce market, best visited before 11am.

Eateries

The usual range of snacks (mobile and/or fixed fast food outlets) operate within Uturoa.

Internet/WiFi

There are wifi hotspots for the major carriers at Marina Apooiti, and a couple in the town centre of Uturoa. See also notes about Internet in French Polynesia.

Laundry

There is a laundry at Marina Apooiti.

Motorbike & Car Rentals

Avis has a depot near the airport, a few km west of Uturoa. Both cars and scooters can be rented.

Garbage Disposal

Garbage can be disposed of in the bins at Marina Apooiti.

Transportation

There are a small number of taxi companies in and around Uturoa but there does not appear to be a regular bus service. There is an airport near the town, with regular shuttle flights to Tahiti.
