Baska is a popular holiday resort nestling in a bay between two mountain ranges at the SE end of the island of the island of Krk in Croatia.  Originally a Roman settlement, the town was rebuilt closer to the sea in the 16th century and much of this later settlement remains today, although considerably altered.  The town is very crowded with holidaymakers during the season and its harbour gets very busy.  A visiting yacht will need to squeeze in wherever it can during the peak summer months, probably using its anchor, on the E breakwater.  Baska is not a good place to make for if there is anything S in the forecast and would be untenable in a southerly gale.

Baska harbour is normally crammed with tripper boats and leisure craft - especially during peak season - but there may be space for a visiting yacht to squeeze in towards the outer end of the E breakwater.  Depths here are 3.0 - 4.0 metres and you will have to use your anchor to go bows or stern-to.  Shelter here is good from most directions, although Baska is uncomfortable in S winds and a southerly gale would probably make the harbour untenable.

Baska harbour from SW - Click for larger view

Local Weather

Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

For sources of weather forecasting, see Croatia.

Approach and Navigation

The town of Baska is easily identified at the head of the bay, ringed by high mountain ranges. Closer in, the long E breakwater will be clearly seen (usually with the masts of yachts clustered along it). Entry to the harbour is between this breakwater and a shorter pier to the W which is used by tripper and hotel boats. Depths in the entrance are around 6.0 - 8.0 metres.

Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)

Baska is not a port of entry. The nearest port of entry is Rijeka.
