Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands.  At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast.  During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas.  In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the ''bora'', is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the ''scirocco'', a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean.  Unlike the ''bora'', the ''scirocco'' only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

Muline bay from N

The bay of Muline is situated on the NW coast of the island of Ugljan, just over a mile from its northernmost tip. On its N side the bay is sheltered by the island of Rivanj and from the W by the island of Sestrunj. Its situation makes it a good natural harbour and the remains of a Roman villa and jetty here show that Muline was used as such in antiquity. There is a modern jetty at the settlement of Muline on the SE side of the bay with laid moorings where a visiting yacht can berth or alternatively there are a number of mooring buoys in the bay. There is also plenty of room to anchor in good depths clear of the buoys. Shelter in the bay is good from all directions, although the anchorage is subject to swell in strong SW winds. The village of Muline ashore has a few facilities, including a restaurant and small shop.

Navigation

There are no dangers in the approach to Muline, although strong currents can run at certain states of tide in the Rivanjski Kanal, the channel between the islands of Rivanj and Sestrunj in the approach from NW and in the Vrata Zdrelac, the channel between Rivanj and Ugljan, in the approach from N. In the approach from E, the channel between the islet of Jidula at the N end of Ugljan and the island has depths of just under 8.0 metres.

The nearest year-round port of entry is Zadar.

Berthing

Anchorage of Muline bay

There are three principal berthing options in and around Muline:

  1. Town jetty At the S end of the town is a curved jetty with laid moorings for around 8-10 yachts. Depths here range from 2.5 metres towards the root to 3.5 metres at the end. Shelter is good in all conditions, although strong NW winds can cause an unpleasant chop.
  2. Mooring buoys In the bay off the town are several mooring buoys in depths of 8.0 - 10.0 metres which can be picked up by visiting yachts. Shelter here is good, though less good in W winds than the jetty.
  3. Anchorages There are two anchorages close to Muline which can be used in winds from N and S. See below for details.

Depending on wind direction, a yacht can anchor towards either the N or S end of Muline bay in depths of 8.0 - 10.0 metres, clear of the mooring buoys and out of the main channel. Holding is moderate to good in sand. Shelter is good in most conditions, but strong SW winds cause a swell. Note that a current of up to a knot runs through the moorings at times.

U. Pavlesina

The cove of U. Pavlesina lies around a low headland at the S end of Muline bay and offers rather better protection in N winds than Muline bay itself. Anchor in 5.0 - 6.0 metres. The holding is good in sand. Shelter is good unless there is anything S in the wind, when you are better off on the N side of the headland.

Tourism

A settlement has existed in Muline bay at least since Roman times, and there are several archaeological remains from that period around the village, including those of a Roman era villa, olive oil mill and mausoleum and an early Christina basilica.
