Luka Krijal is a small settlement on the NW coast of the island, protected from onshore winds by the chain of islets. A small harbour and ferry jetty has been constructed here in recent years. Although the harbour is tiny and relatively shallow, a yacht drawing under 2.0 metres can moor in here if there is space. Depths in the entrance are 4.0 metres, shallowing to 2.0 metres at the head of the harbour. Tie up wherever there is space, using the mooring lines provided. Depths at the quay are reduced in places by ballast, so it is best to go bows-to. Shelter in the harbour is good, although strong S winds would probably make it very uncomfortable. | Luka Krijal is a small settlement on the NW coast of the island, protected from onshore winds by the chain of islets. Premuda Island lies off the mainland coast of Croatia, 12 miles SSE of the much larger island of Losinj and five miles W of the island of Silba. A mile SE lies the tiny island of Skarda and, beyond it, Ist and Molat. The island offers few facilities, but there are two useful anchorages on the SW coast which offer good shelter in all but strong NW or S winds. There is also a small and shallow harbour (which usually has space for a few yachts even in high season) and mooring buoys just off it for use in settled weather.

Weather
Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.
Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.
For sources of weather forecasting, see Croatia.

Berthing options
There are three berthing options at Premuda Island:
1. Luka Krijal harbour 44°20.21′N, 14°35.9′E
2. Luka Krijal moorings
Alternatively, pick up one of the mooring buoys laid between the harbour and the chain of offshore islets. The moorings are mostly in depths of 5.0 metres and are rather exposed, although shelter is acceptable here as long as there are no strong NW or SE winds. A charge is made for using the buoys.
3. Uv. Premuda 44°19.6′N, 14°37.49′E
Just over a mile SE of Luka Krijal is the inlet of Uv. Premuda, a wooded inlet with three arms - N, E and S - where a yacht can anchor inshore in depths of 6.0 - 8.0 metres, depending on the winds. The most popular anchorage is in the S arm, where shelter is good in all but strong NW winds. Holding is good in sand and weed. It is also possible to take lines ashore here to limit swinging or to hold a yacht bows on to the swell. Note that there is a rocky shelf off the S headland of the bay which should be given a good offing.
