Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast.  During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas.  In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the ''bora'', is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.
 +

 +
Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the ''scirocco'', a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean.  Unlike the ''bora'', the ''scirocco'' only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

It is possible in settled weather to anchor in 4.0 - 5.0 metres in the small cove to the N, just inside the headland on which the monastery sits.  Holding here is good in sand and the shelter acceptable in light winds. However, the anchorage is completely open S.  Note that the cove is a popular swimming area and it is probably unwise to anchor here at busy times.

Ugljan harbour from NE - Click for larger view

The tiny harbour of Ugljan Town lies on the NE coast of the island of Ugljan two miles from its northernmost tip and five miles NW of Zadar. The harbour is shallow, mostly with depths of 1.0 - 2.0 metres, but the outer breakwater has depths suitable for a shallow to moderate draft yacht to moor. Shelter in the harbour is good from all directions except NE and E. At the N end of the town on the E side of a small cove is a 15th century Franciscan monastery containing an interesting Gothic church and cloisters.

Local Weather

Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands. At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast. During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas. In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the bora, is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the scirocco, a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean. Unlike the bora, the scirocco only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

Approach and Navigation

There are no dangers in the approach to Ugljan Town from S, but in the approach from N there is a rocky spit extending for some 100 metres SE of the headland 500 metres N of the harbour, on which there is a conspicuous monastery and a white cross on the shore end of the spit. Note that the depths in the bay are little more than 5.0 metres, shelving to 3.0 metres at the harbour entrance. The shore is rocky close in on both sides of the harbour.

Check-in facilities (for Customs and Immigration)

The nearest year-round port of entry is Zadar.

Berthing Options

The harbour is only suitable for shallow or moderate draft yachts. The only suitable berth is alongside the end of the E breakwater, on the outer, ‘dogleg’ section. Depths here are 2.0 - 2.5 metres. The inner section of the breakwater has only 1.5 - 2.0 metres. Shelter here is good in winds from NW round to SE but poor in NE and E winds.
