Diurnal winds among the islands are mostly moderate during the summer months, predominantly from NW and rarely exceeding force 4/5, although gusting is common in narrow channels between islands and on the lee side of headlands.  At night, katabatic winds off the mountains affect some of the islands close to the mainland coast.  During early spring and (especially) autumn conditions can be more unsettled, occasionally accompanied by violent thunderstorms - luckily of short duration - with winds of 30-35 knots or more and vicious, steep seas.  In the winter the sudden, violent N wind off the mountains, the ''bora'', is much to be feared, especially along the coast from Rijeka down to Zadar, although its effects can be felt as far south as Split.

Equally prevalent in winter - although not uncommon in summer - is the ''scirocco'', a S/SE wind that blows up from North Africa, usually in advance of a depression moving E across the Mediterranean.  Unlike the ''bora'', the ''scirocco'' only occasionally exceeds gale force, but is still a phenomenon to be wary of, especially if on a lee coast.

The bay of Zaljev Vir is nearly two miles wide from W to E. Its eastern extremity terminates at the bridge joining the island to the mainland. The settlement of Vir Town sprawls along most of the N shore of the bay. If approaching from W, note that there is an unmarked shoal area around 500 metres NE of the headland at the W end of the bay. Once into the bay, anchor wherever convenient off the town in 6.0 - 8.0 metres. The holding is good in sand and weed. Shelter is good here in the prevailing NW winds, but the bay is completely open S and SE and untenable in strong winds from this directions. In the event of fresh to strong easterlies, the cove at the NE end of the bay at {{Coord legacy|44|17.4|N|15|07.02|E|}} offers better shelter, with lines ashore if necessary. There are several jetties along the shore in front of the town. Normally they are occupied by small local craft and fishing boats, but it may be possible for a moderate draft yacht to lie alongside or bows/stern-to using the anchor at one of these if there is room.

The hamlet of Lozice lies on the N coast of the island, at the head of a shallow inlet. The harbour here is too shallow for most yachts, but there is a good anchorage off the harbour in 6.0 - 8.0 metres. The holding is good in sand and weed.   The anchorage offers good shelter in S winds and is the place to head if there is a scirocco forecast, but is completely open N and should not be used in any but light winds from that direction.

The bay of Vir Town

The small island of Vir in Croatia lies just off the SW end of the larger island Pag, separated from it by a channel less than a mile wide, the Kanal Nove Povljane. At its SE end, the island is joined to the mainland by a road bridge, the channel beneath which is navigable only by small vessels. The island has just one village on the S coast, Vir Town, with a population of around 1500, and an even smaller settlement on its N coast, Lozice. Although a small island, it is a popular destination for tourists from the mainland during the summer. Vir is less visited by yachtsmen than its neighbouring islands, however, in view of its limited facilities, which consist of an anchorage in the wide bay off Vir Town open to S winds and another off Lozice open N.
