Veli Lošinj

The tiny port of Veli Lošinj lies on the E coast of the island of Lošinj, two miles SE of the island’s capital, Mali Lošinj and 14 miles S of the Osor canal. Like Mali Losinj, the village prospered in the 19th century days of sail and the harbour is ringed with the houses of former sea captains. The baroque church of St Anthony of Egypt on the harbour is one of the finest on the island. The harbour itself is quite cramped and is only suitable for a brief visit by yacht (more than 6-7 and it is practically full). Shelter is reasonable but the harbour becomes untenable with strong N winds.

There are no dangers in the approach to Veli Lošinj. However, an approach in fresh to strong N winds is inadvisable and in any case, the harbour would probably be untenable in such conditions. Depths in the harbour entrance are around 6.0 metres and alongside the outer quay a little over 2.0 metres.
Entrance
Veli Lošinj is not a port of entry. The nearest port of entry is Mali Lošinj.

Places to Visit
The village is extremely picturesque, with pastel-coloured houses clustered around narrow streets winding up the steep slopes around the harbour. The harbour is dominated by the impressive Baroque church of Sv. Antun (St Anthony), which contains several fine paintings of the Italian school. Dozens of sea captains were buried under the church floor, their other memorial being the numerous fine villas in the village. Behind the town is a 15th-century tower built by the Venetians to protect the harbour from Dalmatian pirates.
