- | + | The town and port of Agropoli lie on the Tyrrhenian coat of Italy some 27 miles SSE of Salerno and six miles S of the World Heritage Site of Paestum. The town developed during the late Roman period, largely due to the silting up of the ancient Greek harbour of Poseidonia (subsequently renamed Paestum by the Romans). The site was originally fortified as a harbour by the Byzantines in the 6th century AD. The naturally well-protected passed through a succession of hands (including Saracens from North Africa) until Italian unification in the 19th century. Today its small harbour is a useful port of call for cruising yachts wishing to visit the ruins of Paestum. | |
