Background
Niseros (Νίσυρος) or Nisyros, or Nisiros is an almost square shaped island with an active volcano whose caldera is about 4 km in diameter. The island has an an area of 41.6 km2 and a diameter of 8 km.
Legend has it that Niseros was a large bowlder which during the battle of the Titans, Poseidon removed from Kos and hurled at the Titan Polyvotes whom he crushed.
Niseros is remote enough that several traditional customs still prevail. If one is lucky, one can still come across musician playing traditional music.
Yiali (Γυαλί) is a small island is located 3 nmi NW of Niseros.

Approaches to Niseros are straightforward except that the entrance to both its harbors are exposed to the meltemi.
Caution: While approaching the small island of Yiali be aware that about 0.5 nM SW of the island there is an underwater reef.
Ports and Popular Stops
There are only two anchorages in Niseros: Pali and the commercial Mandraki.
Pali

The harbor has been substantially expanded in 2008, its break water extended, and its entrance was changed from facing north to facing east. It now a comfortable and attractive marina. Gone is the uncomfortable swell of years past. Moor stern-to on the N quay or to the S. There is water and electricity available but there still no laid moorings you have to anchor. There is an attendant, during the day, who will help you with your lines. There is no charge save a 5 € fee for water and a 5 € fee for electricity.

Mandraki

Mandraki (Μανδράκι) is the commercial harbor of Niseros. It is a very small harbor dominated by day-trip boats from Kos. When the ferry boat from Kos arrives the day-trip boats exit the harbor because there is not enough room! Yachts are discouraged in Mandraki. Go to Pali. The water here while it provides good protection from the meltemi, is polluted from the quarries. Anchor at 5-6 m depth. The bottom is sand and provides good holding.
